SUN SUPREME (IBIS) - 1974

Dopo la pubblicazione di “UT”, i New Trolls si sciolsero a causa di divergenze di carattere musicale. Vittorio De Scalzi non aveva gradito le sonorità “hard” di “UT”, e decise quindi di formare un nuovo gruppo insieme a Giorgio D’Adamo: i New Trolls Atomic System. Il chitarrista-cantante Nico Di Palo formò a sua volta un nuovo gruppo, in attesa di una decisione del tribunale riguardo all’utilizzo del nome “New Trolls”. Insieme al tastierista Maurizio Salvi, Di Palo realizzò l’album “Canti d’innocenza, canti d’esperienza”.

Alla dipartita del batterista Gianni Belleno, Nico Di Palo si trovò a dover cercare un sostituto alle percussioni, oltre ad un nuovo nome per la band. Il problema del nuovo batterista fu risolto da Frank Laugelli, bassista del gruppo, il quale si recò all’estero in cerca del sostituto, trovandolo in Ric Parnell, ex Atomic Rooster. Il nome del nuovo quartetto fu scelto dai lettori della celebre rivista musicale dell’epoca “Ciao 2001”, i quali optarono, mediante un sondaggio, per il nome “Ibis”. E con questo nuovo nome. Nico Di Palo e soci pubblicarono nel 1974 l’album che posto oggi: “Sun Supreme”.

Un album che indulge al genere hard, tuttavia con numerosi agganci al rock sinfonico progressivo. Pur non trattandosi di musica “difficile da digerire” quale, ad esempio, quella del contemporaneo album “Ys” del Balletto di Bronzo (da me postato qualche giorno fa), “Sun Supreme” si caratterizza per l’azzeccato equilibrio fra le parti di chitarra (Nico Di Palo) e delle tastiere (Maurizio Salvi). Inoltre, la voce di Di Palo rappresenta uno dei tratti salienti del disco. La pronuncia dell’inglese è impeccabile, per non parlare dell’incredibile estensione vocale di quello che è stato battezzato all’epoca “il Jimy Hendrix nostrano”.

La suite "Divinity" offre, a mio parere, il meglio di quest’album, con le tastiere di Maurizio Salvi che predominano (ottimo il suo lavoro al moog e al mellotron).

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

The New Trolls broke up after the album "UT" because of musical divergences. Vittorio De Scalzi had not liked the hard rock sound of "UT" and formed New Trolls Atomic System with Giorgio D'Adamo. Nico Di Palo started another group while waiting on a judge's decision concerning the use of the name New Trolls. Nico Di Palo along with keyboardist Maurizio Salvi made an album called “Canti d’innocenza, canti d’esperienza”.

After drummer Gianni Belleno had quitted, Nico Di Palo searched for a new band name, as well as a replacement for Belleno. Bassist Frank Laugelli solved the Belloni replacement problem by going abroad; he enlisted the aid of former Atomic Rooster drummer Ric Parnell. "The quartet let the readers of famous 1970s Italian rock magazine “Ciao 2001” pick the name through a survey". The readers chose Ibis; under the new name Ibis, Di Palo and team released “Sun Supreme”, the album I’m posting today.

"Sun Supreme" is a hard rock album with elements of symphonic progressive rock. The music is not quite as hard as its contemporary “Ys” released by Balletto di Bronzo (which I posted a few days ago), yet "Sun Supreme" offers a nice balance between Di Palo's guitars and Salvi's keyboards. Moreover, Di Palo's voice is one of highlights of the album. His pronunciation of English words is flawless. And he has a great sounding voice with excellent range. (For the sake of curiosity, Nico Di Palo was nicknamed “Italy’s Jimy Hendrix” in the 1970s.)

The suite "Divinity" is the best part of the album; Salvi's keyboards are the dominant instruments in this three-piece masterpiece (awesome moog and mellotron work, indeed).

My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.
