DOROTHY'S VICTORY (BEL CANTO) - 2002

I norvegesi Bel Canto, duo formato dalla vocalist Anneli Drecker e dal polistrumentista Nils Johansen, hanno segnato una tappa importante nello sviluppo del pop romantico “onirico”. Ho già postato un disco di questa originale band (11 marzo 2007): “White-out conditions”, l’ottimo album d’esordio. Dopo la pubblicazione di “Birds of passage” (1989), i Bel Canto hanno gradualmente optato per un tipo di musica più commerciale con l’album “Shimmering, warm and bright” (1992) - trasformazione completata con il dance-pop decadente di “Magic box” (1996).
“Dorothy’s victory” (2002) è il sesto album del duo e, a dire la verità, si pone leggermente più in basso rispetto ai lavori precedenti. A quanto pare, il duo norvegese mirava semplicemente a realizzare un disco di musica soft rilassante, a scapito delle ambizioni artistiche del primo periodo. In ogni caso, “Dorothy’s victory” si ascolta con piacere, specialmente se si apprezzano le atmosphere pop tipiche delle band nord-europee.

A major phase in the history of “dream-pop” was heralded by Norway's Bel Canto, the project of vocalist Anneli Drecker and multi-instrumentalist Nils Johansen. I have already posted an album of this band, “White-out conditions” (see March 11th, 2007), which was the excellent debut album. After releasing “Birds of passage” (1989), Bel Canto began to mutate into a less organic and more fashionable unit with “Shimmering, warm and bright” (1992), a transformation that was completed by the lush, decadent dance-pop of “Magic box” (1996).
“Dorothy’s victory” (2002), Bel Canto’s sixth release, stands a little lower than the band’s previous albums. Apparently, the Norwegian duo was simply aiming for smooth, relaxing lounge-music with reduced artistic value. In any case, “Dorothy’s victory” is a pleasant listen, especially you are keen on subdued Northern Europe pop atmospheres.
