I Matt Bianco non sono certo un gruppo progressive, tuttavia erano una delle mie band preferite a fine anni Ottanta. Nacquero nel 1982 su iniziativa di Mark Reilly, Danny White, Toto Poncioni e la cantante polacca Basia, dopo che Reilly e White avevano abbandonato il gruppo “pop-art” Blue Rondo a la Turk. L’album d’esordio “Whose side are you on?” proiettò immediatamente e sorprendentemente la band all’attenzione del pop internazionale, grazie al loro azzeccato mix di ska, jazz e soul, il tutto abbinato all’originale voce di Basia – un cocktail del tutto originale a quell’epoca. Il look anni Cinquanta e l’uscita di due videoclip di indubbia efficacia contribuirono al successo planetario del Matt Bianco.
La formazione originale cessò di esistere – senza contrasti interni, va sottolineato – dopo l’uscita del primo album, così Mark Reilly si unì all’ex-tastierista dei Wham Mark Fisher, continuando a produrre dischi con il nome Matt Bianco e attingendo a nuovi stili musicali quali la bossa nova, la salsa e il pop leggero. Dal 1991 la band, tuttora attiva, registra e produce gli album in uno studio proprio, con l’aiuto di ottimi musicisti.
Nel 2004 Mark Fisher ha abbandonato il gruppo; a seguito di ciò, Mark Reilly ha ricostituito la formazione originale con Basia e Danny White, firmando un contratto con la Emarcy Records e pubblicando il dodicesimo album dal titolo “Matt’s mood”, accolto favorevolmente sia dal pubblico (registrando il tutto esaurito ovunque) sia dalla critica.
Una compilation davvero gradevole – un ottimo mix di pop elettronico, ritmi latini e parti cantate.

Matt Bianco are no prog rock band indeed, yet they were one of my favourite pop groups in the late 1980s. They were founded in 1982 by Mark Reilly, Danny White, Toto Poncioni and background vocalist Basia, just after Reilly and White left art-poppers Blue Rondo a la Turk. Their first album, “Whose side are you on?” turned them overnight into superstars, as their mixture of ska, jazz and soul, mixed with Basia’s impressive and sophisticated vocal harmonies, was unheard in 1983. Their 1950s black-and-white styling, mixed with postmodern flair and a couple of snappy videos helped as well.
The original lineup split amicably after the release of their first album and Mark Reilly teamed up with ex-Wham keyboarder Mark Fisher and continued to work under the name Matt Bianco, extending the range of their music to bossa nova, salsa and plain pop. Since 1991 they have been recording and producing their albums in their own two studios with the help of an impressive cast of studio musicians, releasing their records to an excited audience, continuing their impressive careers.
In 2004 Mark Fisher took a hiatus from Matt Bianco and Mark Reilly reunited with Basia and Danny White and signed with Emarcy records to record their 12th album, “Matt’s mood”. The following tour found one sold-out crowd after the other in the U.S. and was received with excellent reviews.
A very likeable compilation, providing a perfect blend of electronic pop, Latin rhythms and godd sound singing.
