Dopo il successone della colonna sonora di “Profondo rosso”, i Goblin dimostrarono di essere in grado di cavarsela da soli (e a quali livelli!) senza legare il loro nome (e il loro successo) a una delle truculente pellicole di Argento, pubblicando nel 1976 “Roller”, un album caratterizzato da una musica più “dilatata” rispetto al lavoro precedente.
L’omonimo pezzo di apertura ruota attorno a un giro di basso e alle inconfondibili tastiere stile Mike Oldfield (compreso un organo a canne). Il brano successivo “Aquaman" è quello dall’atmosfera più suggestiva, con il piano elettrico che cede il passo a una sezione in qualche modo reminescente dei Pink Floyd. Segue "Snip snap", tipico “funky” con clavinet e basso senza tasti in risalto: un pezzo che ricorda in qualche modo le atmosfere de Il Volo (altra band progressive italiana anni Settanta) nel loro album "Essere o non essere?”, con un grintoso sound funky “nero” abbinato ai temi progressive in voga all’epoca. “Il risveglio del serpente” è un dolce e malinconico assolo di piano. Il quinto brano dell’album (quello che introduceva il lato “B” dell’LP originale in vinile) si intitola "Goblin" e, con i suoi 11 minuti di durata, rappresenta il pezzo forte del disco. Si tratta del brano che permette al gruppo di esprimersi al meglio, con melodie azzeccate, ritmi serrati e un’esecuzione impeccabile (fra l’altro, lo stile del bassista Fabio Pignatelli ricorda a tratti quello di Chris Squire degli Yes). Il pezzo conclusivo, "Dr. Frankenstein", rappresenta, a mio parere, il modo "peggiore"per chiudere un album così bello.

After reaching the top of the charts with their “Profondo rosso” album (i.e. the soundtrack to the famous Dario Argento’s thriller movie), Italian prog rock band Goblin released their “Roller” album in 1976. This album showed that the band were able to float all by themselves without a gruesome Dario Argento flick to back them up. And without the need of worry about a film, the music in this album tends to be a bit longer and definitely nicer than what they did when they recorded the “Profondo rosso” soundtrack.
The album opens up with "Roller", a song circling around some slap-bass, some Oldfield-like keyboards, and a pipe organ. "Aquaman" is a nice atmospheric piece dominated by the electric piano, then there's a Pink Floyd-like section with Hammond organ. "Snip snap" is a funky piece, dominated by clavinet, with some great use of fretless bass. This song isn't too far off with what Il Volo (another 1970s Italian prog band) did on "Essere o Non Essere?”, combining a funk sound with the prog sound of the time. "Il risveglio del serpente” is mainly a live piano-dominated piece. "Goblin", the lengthiest piece at 11 minutes, is the album's high point, really allowing the band to stretch out, with some somewhat spacy passages, to more funky passages, great themes and great playing all around (among other things, bassist Fabio Pignatelli sometimes seems to play his bass after the fashion of Yes’s Chris Squire). Unfortunately the last piece, "Dr. Frankenstein" is the album's only real weak spot.
