Visto che ho da poco postato la colonna sonora di un film tutt’altro che “pane, amore e fantasia”, eccomi quindi a parlarvi di “Cane di paglia”, uno dei primi successi del grande Dustin Hoffman.
Senz’altro uno dei film migliori mai visti in vita mia: “Cane di paglia” (1971), diretto da Sam Peckinpah, con la partecipazione brillante di Dusting Hoffman e Susan George. La pellicola si basa sul romanzo “The siege of treacher’s farm” scritto da Gordon Williams.
“Cane di paglia” fu oggetto di aspre polemiche al momento della sua uscita, e ancora oggi fa parlare di sé. Tali polemiche riguardavano soprattutto la cruda e prolungata scena dello stupro - uno dei momenti topici della vicenda. I critici, soprattutto quelli di parte femminile, accusarono Peckinpah di dare eccessivo risalto e di compiacersi in qualche modo di una sorta di sadismo misogino. In particolare, quello che colpì fu la sottile ambiguità della scena "incriminata", nella quale Amy (la donna che subisce violenza) pare in alcuni istanti “gradire” il brutale trattamento al quale viene sottoposta. I sostenitori di Peckinpah fecero notare che, al contrario, quella scena era chiaramente terrificante, e che il trauma patito da Amy veniva reso in modo fedele, senza doppie interpretazioni. In ogni caso, i detrattori di Peckinpah continuano a citare tale scena quale prova della misoginia del regista.
“Cane di paglia” narra la storia di David Sumner, un matematico americano interpretato da Dustin Hoffman, e di Susan George, la moglie britannica di David. I due fanno ritorno nella città nativa della donna in Cornovaglia (Gran Bretagna), per sfuggire alla violenza e alla delinquenza che imperversano nella società americana. Tuttavia, pur in quella tranquilla località inglese, David e Amy si trovano a dover subire le angherie della popolazione locale, fino a quando due uomini violentano la bella Amy. E quando Henry Niles (interpretato da David Warner), un giovanotto del posto con un lieve deficit mentale (nel film, viene presentato come una sorta di pedofilo che ...
Ovviamente non andrò oltre con la trama del film, qualora non l’abbiate ancora visto. “Cane di paglia” continua ancora oggi a dividere pubblico e critica, anche se i suoi detrattori ne hanno finalmente riconosciuto l’importanza e bellezza cinematografica. Con il passare degli anni, “Cane di paglia” è stato considerato un classico del cinema moderno.

One of the best movies I have ever seen, “Straw dogs” is a 1971 film directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Dusting Hoffman and Susan George as leading characters. It is based on the novel “The siege of treacher’s farm” by Gordon Williams.
The film was wildly controversial on its release and has remained so to this day. Most of the controversy revolved around the long and highly explicit rape scene which is the centerpiece of the film. Critics, especially feminist critics, accused Peckinpah of glamorizing rape and engaging in misogynistic sadism. They were particularly disturbed by the seeming ambiguity of the rape scene, in which Amy at certain points appears to be asking for and enjoying the abuse she is subjected to. Peckinpah's defenders claimed that the scene was unambiguously horrifying and that Amy's trauma was truthfully portrayed in the film. Peckinpah's detractors continue to cite this scene as proof of Peckinpah's chauvinism and misogyny.
