IT'S MY LIFE (TALK TALK) - 1984

I Talk Talk sono stati un gruppo rock britannico attivo dal 1981 al 1991. Un gruppo noto prevalentemente per i singoli di pop elettronico che ne hanno decretato la fama: "Today", "Talk Talk”, “It’s my life”, “Such a shame”, “Life’s what you make it”. Tuttavia, in ambito critico i Talk Talk sono maggiormente apprezzati per i risultati raggiunti con gli ultimi due album “sperimentali”, considerati come progenitori del genere “post-rock”.
Il gruppo ebbe un vasto successo commerciale in Europa nel biennio 1984/85 grazie all’album che posto oggi: “It’s my life”. Tutti quelli oltre la quarantina ricorderanno il celebre singolo tratto dall’album: “Such a shame” - un brano che, insieme all’album nel suo insieme, rappresentò una sorta di icona per gli appassionati del genere new wave (come avvenne per altri singoli più o meno di quell’epoca, ad esempio “Shout” dei Tears for Fears o “The reflex” dei Duran Duran). Curiosamente, tuttavia, sia l’album sia i suoi fortunati singoli passarono quasi del tutto inosservati nella natia Gran Bretagna.
Tutto sommato, “It’s my life” rimane un disco piacevole da ascoltare, nonostante le sue tipiche sonorità in stile New Wave anni Ottanta lo rendano alquanto datato. Personalmente, c’è un brano che adoro dell’album, un brano che mi fa andare indietro nel tempo e provare sensazioni … meditabonde e un po’ tristi: “Renée”. Quando ascolto questa canzone, non posso fare a meno di ricordare una meravigliosa ragazza con la quale uscivo all’epoca. Un giorno dell’autunno 1984 stavo appunto ascoltando “Renée” quando la tipa in questione mi telefonò, dicendomi che non voleva più uscire con me … Scoppiai a piangere e l’unica cosa che fui in grado di fare fu ascoltare “Renée” non so quanto volte di seguito, pensando a quel fiore che mi era appena sfuggito di mano. Capirete ora perché sono ancora oggi così legato a questo album ...

Talk Talk were a popular British rock group that were active from 1981 to 1991. In mainstream circles, the group is most well known for their early synth-pop singles, including the international hits "Today", "Talk Talk”, “It’s my life”, “Such a shame”, “Life’s what you make it”. However, in the music community they are recognized more for the artistic achievements of their later experimental albums, recognized as forerunners to the post-rock genre.
Talk Talk had a huge success in 1984/85 in continental Europe with the album “It’s my life”. The accompanying single "Such a Shame" became a major hit and a number one in several countries during this period, and an icon for many New Wave listeners (as the songs “Shout” by Tears for Fears or “The reflex” by Duran Duran, nearly released at the same time). But strangely, this album and its singles were relatively ignored in their native UK.
All things considered, “It’s my life” is still a nice listen, despite its typical mid-Eighties new wave feeling sounds a bit outdated by now. Personally, I love one song from this album, which makes me go back in time and feel somehow ... broody and a little sad: “Renée”. When I listen to this song, I can’t help remembering a lovely girl I used to go out with at that time. One day in autumn 1984 I was listening to this song when that lovely girl phoned me and said she didn’t want to go out with me any more ... Well, I cried and kept on listening to “Renée” a lot of times, thinking about the girl I had just lost. Now you can understand why I’m so affectionate to this album ...
