“Earthbound” è un disco dal vivo dei King Crimson, pubblicato nel 1972. Se, da un lato, è stato oggetto di critiche positive per via delle sue atmosfere funky - decisamente insolite per la band - dall’altro è stato stroncato per l’orribile qualità sonora: infatti, l’album fu registrato (in parte sotto la pioggia, nel retro di un furgone Volkswagen) da Hunter MacDonald, tecnico del suono al seguito del gruppo in tournee.
Indubbiamente si tratta di un disco per i fanatici dei King Crimson e dei collezionisti di rock progressivo. Se il suono non fosse stato così mediocre, sarebbe stato se non altro un album accettabile, soprattutto per il fatto di mostrare una veste inedita della band. La sezione ritmica (Boz Burrell al basso, Ian Wallace alla batteria) è a dir poco “primitiva”, certamente non all’altezza dei King Crimson dei primi album, tuttavia contribuisce a quel sound peculiare di Earthbound basato, come nel caso di “Peoria” e del brano omonimo, su riff funky. Per non parlare di Robert Fripp: in questo disco ascoltiamo un Fripp l’esatto contrario di ciò al quale da sempre ci ha abituati: istintivo, quasi grezzo. Ed è proprio tale peculiarità che mi ha indotto a postare quest’album.

It has been praised for its funky grooves (unusual for the band) but widely criticized for its very poor sound quality, due to it being recorded - partially in the rain, from the back of a Volkswagen truck - by live sound engineer Hunter MacDonald.
