NEWS OF THE WORLD (QUEEN) - 1977

“News of the world”, sesto album dei Queen (1977), conclude quella che personalmente definisco la “trilogia d’oro” di Freddy Mercury & Co. vale a dire, “A night at the opera”, “A day at the races” e, per l’appunto, “News of the world".

L’album deve soprattutto la fama a successi planetari quali “We will rock you”, “Spread your wings” e, soprattutto, “We are the champions”, l’inno che ormai accompagna molti eventi sportivi. Pur rappresentando un netto distacco dal suono inizialmente progressive del gruppo, “News of the world” viene giudicato uno dei lavori migliori realizzati dai Queen. Personalmente, considero di gran lunga superiore “A night at the opera” (postato il 27 aprile); tuttavia, c’è un brano di “News of the world” che a distanza di trent’anni continua a farmi impazzire: “It’s late”. Anzi, più lo sento, più lo adoro.

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

Released in 1977, “News of the world” is the sixth studio album by the Queen. It concludes what I personally call the Queen’s “golden trilogy”, i.e. “A night at the opera”, “A day at the races” and, precisely, “News of the world”.

The album contains such hit songs as “We will rock you”, “Spread your wings” and, above all, “We are the champions” - a sort of an anthem commonly heard at sporting events. Despite being an abrupt departure from the band's early progressive sound, “News of the world” is considered one of the Queen's best albums ever. Personally, I think “A night at the opera” (which I posted on April 27th) is much better; however, “News of the world” contains a piece which keeps on getting me crazy even after thirty years I first listened to it: “It’s late”. The more I listent to it, the more I love it.
