WATERCOURSE WAY (SHADOWFAX) - 1976

Lo scorso aprile ho postato un album degli Shadowfax intitolato “The odd get even”.

Voto personale (Insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

Last April I posted an album by Shadowfax entitled “The odd get even”. A good pop-music album indeed. But I hadn’t known that their debut album was a real knock-out until I listened to it.

“Watercourse way” (released in 1976) is an astonishing sequence of songs (6 altogether) alternating heavy, breath-taking music to relaxing interludes, all of which by combining fusion, rock-jazz, ambient music and progressive rock. No doubt, !Watercourse way” is one of the prog rock’s best achievements in the 1970s, though it is still not known (unfortunately) by most prog rock fans.

When listening to the album for the first time, the style of this album will make you recall King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, early Genesis (maybe), only to mention a few. Yet, the gamut of instruments used (e.g. sax, flute, oboe, tabla, harpsichord and clarinet, in addition to the traditional rock music instruments) makes it really difficult to label the music in “Watercourse way”.

By way of curiosity, the group’s name Shadowfax comes from Gandalf’s horse name in Tolkien’s “The lord of the rings”.

My personal mark (poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

Eccellente album. L'avevo sentito anni fa e poi me ne ero dimenticato. Ciao
