KEN RUSSELL (1927-2011) - R.I.P.

Ken Russell, one of the most provocative, iconoclast and greatest film-makers ever (and, for this very reason, one of my favourite ones, together with Stanley Kubrick), died three days ago. His masterpieces include "Women in love", "Savage Messiah", "Tommy", "China blue", "Altered states" and "Whore".
But, above all, "The Devils" is Russell's true masterpiece, in my opinion - a movie that shocked and impressed me positively when I first watched it. It caused a sensation at the Venice International Festival of Film in 1971 (where it was awarded the Best Director-Foreign Film prize): of course, censorship hit the film, strongly urged by the Catholic Church, and "The Devils" was banned in Italy for nearly one year. Among other things, Giovanni Raboni, an Italian reviewer and poet working for Catholic-oriented newspaper "L'Avvenire", was fired by the newspaper management because he had somewhat praised Russell's movie ...
Rest in peace, Ken, among the good-hearted - Not among the bad souls, the Devils you perfectly depicted in your masterpiece movie. And if you watched the movie, as I myself did, you know very well who are the Devils I'm talking about ...
