APPROACHING SILENCE (David Sylvian) - 1999

Voto PERSONALISSIMO (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

“Approaching silence” is an ambient music album by David Sylvian (along with, among the others, King Crimson’s everlasting Robert Fripp). It is a collection of the tracks from the 1991 limited-release “Ember glance: the permanence of memory” CD, which accompanied an installation art exhibition held in Tokyo (Japan).

I have to tell you that this album will sound somehow boring to the average listener, since the two main pieces (“The beekeeper’s apprentice” and “Approaching silence”, lasting 32’56” and 38’17”, respectively) are actually based on one single chord. And I will tell you more: “Approaching silence” has been one of my favourite albums for the past few months. So, you might think: 1) Anonimo Veneziano has gone soft in his head; or 2) he is getting, i.e. has already got, depressed.

Neither of them: I am in full command of all my faculties and I feel more and more euphoric (or, rather, ‘socially angry’). In any case, do as you like: yet, I suggest that you should listen to this album a little. Try to listen to it a few minutes: then, you might be appreciating it, little by little.

My VERY PERSONAL mark (poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.
