ANIMA LATINA (Lucio Battisti) - 1974

Si può arrivare a 51 anni e non avere mai ascoltato un album del calibro di 'Anima Latina'?

Incredibile, soprattutto nel caso del sottoscritto, musicista e da sempre appassionato di buona musica. E pensare che Battisti era uno dei miei cantautori preferiti da ragazzo.

Ho letto in una recensione che Anima Latina è l’unico album di Battisti (di quelli ‘storici’, realizzati con Mogol) dal quale non era stato tratto un singolo di successo. In effetti, ricordo solo il pezzo intitolato ‘Il salame’ come l’unico appartenente a questo album.

La scorsa estate mi è capitato per caso di leggere la rivista RollingStone (mi pare che fosse il numero di luglio). C’era un’ottima recensione in cui si indicava ‘Anima latina’ come il migliore, reale contributo italiano al genere progressive di quegli anni. L’affermazione mi è parsa esagerata; ad ogni modo, ho provveduto a scaricare l’album. E sono cinque mesi che lo ascolto un giorno sì e l’altro pure ...

Se mai esiste qualche visitatore che non ha mai ascoltato ‘Anima latina’, consiglio di farlo immediatamente: vi concedo al massimo 24 ore di tempo!

Nota: La voce di Battisti suona ‘lontana’. Non è un difetto di registrazione: il musicista aveva fatto appositamente questa scelta, in modo che la voce suonasse al pari di altri strumenti.

How could I just turn fifty-one without having ever listened to such a masterpiece as Lucio Battisti’s 'Anima Latina’?

That’s incredible, especially as I am concerned – me, having always been a musician and a music fan. Moreover, Lucio Battisti used to be one of my favourite singers and songwriters when I was a teenager.

‘Anima latina’ is the only one of the albums released by Battisti (I mean, the ‘glorious’ ones composed together with Mogol in the 1970s) from which no single hit had been taken. As a matter of fact, I can only remember the title of a song included in this album: ‘Il salame’.

Last summer I happened to read the Italian release of the RollingStone magazine (the July issue). My attention was drawn to a review according to which ‘Anima latina’ was considered to be Italy’s best contribution to the progressive rock genre of that time. Well, I thought this statement was quite exaggerated; yet, I took care to download the album straight away. And I’ve been listening to it nearly every day over the past five months ...

Is there any visitor to his blog who has never listened to this album? Well, you must do it immediately – don’t waste your time!

Note: Lucio Battisti’s voice sounds as ‘distant’ in the tracks of this album. It is no recording defect at all, of course: Battisti himself decided that it should, as if his voice sounded like any other instrument used in the album.
