BUON 2012 (HAPPY NEW YEAR)

Cosa fare? In questi tempi???
Bah ... lasciamo perdere.
ANONIMO VENEZIANO

What should I do? Should I customarily wish you a 'Happy New Year'? At the present, troublesome times?
Well ... forget it! Better laugh at it, like I usually do. In any case, I do wish all the best in the new year to you all.
Then, everyone will make the wish they like better ...

Voto personale: Non spetta a me giudicare ...

(Top: Nadia and I performing live at a restaurant, June 2001)

I had already posted this album a long time ago, twice (on April 20th, 2007 and on June 19th, 2007). And I had also introduced it 'mysteriously', referring to it as a work self-produced (in a very 'cheap' fashion) by an amateur duo of friends of mine.
Now, after more than four years, I have wondered why I had to be so mysterious, also considering that "Pagine di ieri" has been downloaded on this blog more than four hundred times ... WELL, THIS ALBUM IS A 'CREATION' OF MINE, I MEAN, MY FORMER SINGER NADIA AND I RECORDED IT IN APRIL 2002 (NADIA WAS MY FORMER SINGER ... WE STOPPED PERFORMING A FEW YEARS AGO, UNFORTUNATELY).
"Pagine di ieri" is an 'easy-listening' pop album, with some hints at prog rock, and all of the songs were composed (both the music and the lyrics) - and, in a few cases, sung - by your most beloved (or most hated) Anonimo Veneziano.
Of course, all songs were registered with S.I.A.E. (i.e. the Italian Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).
My personal mark: It is not up to me to give a 'fair' mark ...

SHLEEP (Robert Wyatt) - 1997

Voto personale: Distinto/Ottimo.

Robert Wyatt, founding member of Soft Machine, is one of the most influential artists of progressive rock. After leaving Soft Machine in 1971, Wyatt started a solo career. On June 1st 1973, during a 'happy' party, Wyatt fell (apparently inebriated) from a fourt floor window at his host's house. He didn't die, but the trauma left him paralyzed from the waist down, consequently forcing him to use a wheelchair.
During his solo career, Robert Wyatt has release fourteen albums. The one I'm posting today ("Shleep") was released in 1997 and provides a very good (in my opinion) mix of pop, rock-jazz, avantgarde music and much more. Among the musicians who helped make the album, mention should be made of two famous artists: Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera.

My personal mark: Fairly/Very good.

No, assolutamente.

THE POWER TO BELIEVE (King Crimson), 2003 - RE-POST

Pubblicato nel 2003, “The power to believe” è l’album dei King Crimson che rappresenta il seguito (anche dal punto di vista tematico) del mini-album “Happy with what you have to be happy with” uscito l’anno prima.
Ad esempio, "Level five" ricorda in qualche modo "Vrooom" e "Red"; "Dangerous curves" riporta a "Mars" e "The talking drum"; "Elektrik" emula i suoni di "Discipline" e "Frame by frame"; "Facts of life" presenta alcuni tratti in comune con "21st century schizoid man" e "The sailor’s tale".
Voto personale (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

“The power to believe” is an album by King Crimson released in 2003, a companion to the preceding mini-album “Happy with what you have to be happy with” (2002). Although the predecessor “The construKction of light” received largely negative reviews, this album was quite well-received, and is seen by some as a new “Larks’ tongues in aspic” because of how hard the album is, even going as far to becoming heavy metal.
The Power to Believe has individual pieces that are similar enough to music from King Crimson’s past history, enough to raise strong comparisons, but unique enough to stand on their own . For example, "Level five" will raise comparisons to "Vrooom" and "Red"; "Dangerous curves" will raise comparisons to "Mars" and "The talking drum"; "Elektrik" to "Discipline" and "Frame by frame"; "Facts of life" to "21st century schizoid man" and "The sailor’s tale".
“Bartok-metal” (with reference to classical composer Bela Bartok) is perhaps a good description for a lot of music here: at least for "Level five" and "Facts of life", but even parts of "The power to believe (3)" reminds me of elements of “Music for strings, percussion and celesta” (also appearing as soundtrack in Stanley Kubrick’s thriller “Shining”). Gamelan music is perhaps the other. Electrified gamelan music appears in the guitar writing of "Elektrik", and shockingly, "Power to Believe (2)" contains a section that simulates a real gamelan orchestra.
I would say that this particular album is the one in the King Crimson canon that most reminds me in spirit of the 1969 band, album, and live group.
My personal mark (poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

BUON NATALE A TUTTI (MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE)

Ah, come sto diventando banale.

ANONIMO VENEZIANO

One could find it hard to wish 'Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year' at the end of 2011. What could I wish to you? A 'prosperous' new year. Yeah, that's right, prosperous. I mean, marked by economic well-being, since the more money on your bank account, so much the better for you. And, of course, wishing you all your best bodily health ...

Well, I realize I'm getting trite. At least, these few lines of mine are not accompanied by religious, happy (and, sometimes, 'fake') images of happiness and the like, as usual when wishing Merry Christmas to anyone. I preferred to post some disputable images, as I have usually been doing recently.

In any case, I wish happiness and good health to everybody. And, above all, plenty of money in your pocket.
Hugs

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucento

I realize I may have get you bored with Lucento, the suburb where I was born and grew up; yet, I can't help posting some more vintage photographs. This is not an exaggerated attachment to my native place: I just feel affectionate to the past times (see also the 'sluttish' post preceding this one). There may be one reason: when you find it hard to be confident about the future, you'd better look back to the past ...
In any case, if you are interested in learning more about Lucento (and, above all, you can read Italian), go to:
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucento

SMANDRACCHIONE D'EPOCA (VINTAGE BAWDY CUTIES)

A lovely set of photos showing old-time bawdy women who dared - praise on them (and luckily for the common 'sex-hungry' man) - to show their best off ...

UN'IMMAGINE STORICA DEL MIO QUARTIERE: LO STESSO LUOGO SESSANT'ANNI DOPO (A VINTAGE PHOTO OF MY NATIVE SUBURB: THE SAME PLACE, AFTER SIXTY YEARS HAVE GONE BY)

Esiste ancora e scorre sotto l'attuale Corso Lombardia!
Quanti ricordi ....

Those who don't live in the Lucento suburb (or in Turin, at large) may take no interest at all in the two pictures above which, on the contrary, mean a lot to me, as I was born and grew up and have always lived in this suburb lying on the North-West outskirts of Turin.
The waterway you can see in the centre of the vintage photo was referred to as 'bealera' (a typical Piedmontese word referring to a waterway used for irrigation or for collecting motive force) and was used by housewives to do the washing (my late, dear mum used to wash the clothes in this channel, in the 1940s and 1950s, when very few people could afford buying washing-machines). Well, the 'bealera' still exists (it runs underneath the present-day 'Corso Lombardia'). The old houses on the right in the vintage photo were taken down in the late 1960s, but I can still remember them as a child. By way of information, the partially visible shop sign in the left top corner of the older photo refers to a barber's shop ('Barbiere' in Italian) that is still in business: it is now run by a friend of mine called Nicola, the son of Mr. Carmelo Saffioti, an emigrant from Sicily who started this business in 1946! This friend of mine has continued the 'family tradition' in the hair-dressing trade, making this shop one of the oldest ones still in business in the suburb.
Everyting else has changed (save for a few small, old buildings) - for instance, the big dark red nine-storey block of flats on the background of the present-day photo ... the block of flats where my grandmother and some of my relatives lived (and where I also lived for a short time after I got separated from my former wife). And the house where I grew up and lived until I was 30 years old lies just round the corner. So many beloved memories ...

ANTONELLA RUGGIERO E FIORELLA MANNOIA

Come potrete notare, l'immagine risale a fine anni Ottanta.

I've always been fond of collecting clippings from music magazines and newspapers since I was a teenager. I casually found the beautiful picture below a few days ago, when I was browsing through my bookcase drawers. Antonella Ruggiero (on the right - former vocalist of Italian pop group Matia Bazar) and Fiorella Mannoia (on the left) are the two Italian female singers I like best, even though they are not classified as prog rock artists. As you can see, the picture dates back to the late 1980s.

COPERTINE ROCK (ROCK ALBUM COVERS)

One of the most traumatic effects of the transition from the former, glorious LPs to the present-day CDs is no doubt the dramatically smaller visual impact of the rock album cover sleeves, some of which can, in my opinion, be considered as real works of art.
Everyone has their own tastes and preference, of course; in any case, the album covers above are, as far as my personal taste is concerned, among the best ones ever. Incidentally, most of them are progressive rock album covers ...

ON LAND - AMBIENT 4 (Brian Eno) - 1982

Voto personale: Ottimo.

Released in 1982, “On land” is the fourth (and final) album of Brian Eno’s ‘ambient’ series. Since I have been listening to this kind of music recently, posting an album by Brian Eno is the least I can do.
Compared to the previous albums of the same series released by this outstanding British artist, “On land” features quite ‘dark’ atmospheres, rendered by the ordinary use of synthetizers and electronic devices and, above all, of natural sounds (for instance, the sound of insects and frogs, the sound of stones hitting one another, etc.).
This album should not be listened to by people suffering from depression or being in low spirits – if you are not, you mustn’t miss it!
My personal mark: Very good.

TRACK LIST:

- Lizard Point
- The lost day
- Tal coat
- Shadow
- Lantern Marsh
- Unfamiliar wind (Leeks Hills)
- A clearing
- Dunwhich Beach, Autumn, 1960

ANCORA GNOCCA FETISH (SOME MORE FETISH CUTIES)

Following the pictures posted a few years ago, here are some more pics showing mature, fetish cuties, more suitable to my age range (well, I only take an interest in mature women above 40 - my tastes are different from the ones of former Italian prime minister 'il Bandanano').
