WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH (Julian Cope) - 1984

"World shut your mouth" is the debut album by Julian Cope,a freakish musician whose "Fried" album I posted last month. In particular, the album posted today is the first solo work Cope released after he left The Teardrop Explodes, a post-punk, psychedelic rock band of the late 1970s. And these very two genres apparently inspired Cope, who was by that time still influenced by his former band's sound.
In the "Fried" album post, I pointed out how Cope was particularly fond of Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's founding member, with whom Cope appeared to have shared the hazardous LSD addiction habit. Due to this very addiction, Cope developed, just like Barrett himself, a number of 'foibles' and obsessions, related to his childhood (for instance, he would collect lots of toys). The latter topics are the ones that inspired Cope when making this album, especially the less 'punky' songs that, in my opinion, are the best ones, i.e. "Sunshine playroom", "Lunatic and fire-pistol" and, above all, "Head hang low" (the best track of the album, in my opinion).
If all the "World shut your mouth" tracks had sounded like the three ones I have just mentioned, I would have given the album a Very good mark. In any case, I think it deserves a Fairly/Very good mark.
