MELOS (CERVELLO) - 1973 (RE-POST)

Voto personale (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

Released in 1973, “Melos” is an Italian prog rock album by Neapolitan band Cervello - one of the most elegantly complex and fully realized albums of the Italian classic prog rock records, a record that fans of King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant will surely approve. The musical approach and the sound are very sophisticated and unique: a combination of primarily guitars, flutes and saxes tightly woven into a very dense, often dark, unsettling, and just plain eerie feel. Some people object to there not being (or being very little) keyboards used to create this sound palette, which is certainly unusual.
The lyrics focus around an interpretation of the singing from a Greek mythology point of view, whereas the music is a successful fusion of Mediterranean sounds with typical complex progressive rock ones, as well as with experimental parts. Flutes are dominant in much of the songs, as four members of the band played that instrument.
“Melos” is an extremely good album (the initial two tracks are really GREAT, capable of standing comparison with the British masters of this genre), one that is probably also "important", from the point of view of prog rock history, in that it is a relatively "early" entry: it is contemporaneous with such masterpieces as “The dark side of the moon”, “Selling England by the pound”, “Close to the edge” and “Larks’ tongues in aspic”. There is no question that this is a very creative album, with fine musicianship, and deserves a place in any serious prog-rock collection.
My personal mark (poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.
