STORMBRINGER (DEEP PURPLE) - 1974

Sebbene considerato da molti un disco “minore” dei Deep Purple, “Stormbringer” (uscito nel 1974) suona piacevole ad oltre trent’anni dalla sua pubblicazione. Certamente la grinta e la freschezza di “Made in Japan” sono ben lontane e, del resto, la band britannica non rientra fra quelle in grado di produrre album di ottimo livello lungo un periodo di tempo significativo.
Eppure, a mio parere, sono proprio quelle atmosfere soft di “Stormbringer” che rendono quest’album migliore di altri lavori pseudo-hard rock pubblicati dai Deep Purple. In particolare, “Holy man”, “Lady double dealer”, “The gypsy” e, soprattutto, lo struggente brano conclusivo “Soldier of fortune” sono decisamente a livelli superiori.

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

Despite being considered a “minor” album by Deep Purple, “Stormbringer” sounds still pleasant more than three decades after it was released (1974). Surely the energy and freshness of “Made in Japan” are quite another thing and, all things considered, Deep Purple were not able to produce first-rate albums over a long period, like many other rock bands did.
Yet, I feel the very soft atmosphere of “Stormbringer” makes this album more appreciable than other pseudo-hard rock works released by the group. In particular, “Holy man”, “Lady double dealer”, “The gypsy” and, above all, the final piece “Soldier of fortune” stand out of their own.

My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.
