BRAIN SALAD SURGERY (EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER) - 1973

Registrato e pubblicato nel 1973, “Brian salad surgery” è il quarto album in studio di Emerson, Lake & Palmer (di cui ho già postato due album: quello d’esordio, il 14 maggio, e una “compilation", il 25 giugno). Viene considerato il migliore da molti fan del gruppo (me compreso) e si contraddistingue per la curiosa cover, opera del discusso artista H. R. Giger.
Il brano più famoso è senz’altro “Karn Evil 9”, una suite che occupa buona parte dell’album. La versione originale era talmente lunga che fu suddivisa in due parti nel vinile a 33 giri. “Karn Evil 9” è considerata uno dei capolavori di EL&P ed è famosa per la frase che Greg Lake pronuncia all’inizio della “First impression, Part 2” - parole che rappresentavano il “biglietto da visita” del gruppo durante i loro concerti dell’epoca: “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends …”. A titolo di curiosità, "Karn Evil 9" vede la partecipazione vocale di Keith Emerson, l’unica in assoluto di tutta la discografia di questo celebre trio progressive britannico.
I testi furono scritti da Greg Lake con la partecipazione di Pete Sinfield, compagno di avventura di Lake ai tempi dei King Crimson. Nel brano strumentale "Toccata" (uno dei momenti topici dell’album), tratto dal 1° Concerto per Piano di Alberto Ginastera, gli effetti speciali elettronici non sono opera di Keith Emerson, come si potrebbe pensare, bensì di Carl Palmer, il quale utilizzò per l’occasione un nuovo (a quei tempi) sintetizzatore per percussioni.

Un album senza brani “incerti”, senza pecche - insomma, una vera “perla” progressive. Al punto da assegnargli il voto massimo: ECCELLENTE.

“Brian salad surgery” is the fourth studio album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer (of which I already posted two albums: the debut one, on May 14th, and a recent compilation, on June 25th). It was released in 1973 - the first EL&P’s record under their Manticore Records imprint, and is considered their best one by many fans of the group (including myself). The cover sleeve was designed by controversial artist H. R. Giger.
The most well-known track is “Karn Evil 9”, the suite covering most of the album. The original version of this suite was so long that it had to be split between sides 1 and 2 of the record. “Karn Evil 9” is reckoned to be one of EL&P’s masterpieces. It is famous for the incipit to its “First impression, Part 2”, with Greg Lake pronouncing the words that became, at that time, the introductory “trademark” during the band’s live performances: “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends …”. For the sake of curiosity, "Karn Evil 9" includes vocal credit for Keith Emerson, and is Emerson's only official vocal credit on an EL&P record.
The lyrics were co-written by Greg Lake with fellow ex-King Crimson member Pete Sinfield. On the instrumental "Toccata" (one of the album highlights) , based on Alberto Ginastera’s 1st Piano Concerto, special synthesized effects were produced not by Keith Emerson but by Carl Palmer, using newly-developed drum synthesizers.

There is no “weak” track on this album - a true progressive rock gem. For this reason, I gave it an “EXCELLENT” mark.
