HERGEST RIDGE (MIKE OLDFIELD) - 1974

“Hergest Ridge” è il secondo album composto ed eseguito quasi interamente da Mike Oldfield e, al pari dell’album precedente del celebre polistrumentista, ebbe un enorme successo planetario.

E proprio come “Tubular bells”, anche “Hergest Ridge” è diviso in due parti. Tuttavia, a differenza del primo album, caratterizzato da bruschi cambiamenti di temi musicali e di ritmiche, Mike Oldfield elabora in modo più “classico” i temi, perfezionando ulteriormente il livello sofisticato della composizione.

I primi tre dischi di Oldfield figurano fra i migliori album progressive di tutti i tempi. Al successo del celeberrimo lavoro d’esordio “Tubular bells”, seguirono “Hergest Ridge” e “Ommadawn” (da me postato il 28 marzo). Un “trittico” alquanto ripetitivo, si potrebbe obiettare - come a dir che ascoltato il primo, si può fare a meno di ascoltare gli altri due. Niente di tutto ciò. “Hergest Ridge” è un disco piacevole all’ascolto, anche a più di trent’anni dalla sua pubblicazione.

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

”Hergest Ridge” is the second album written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield and, like its predecessor “Tubular bells”, won a great success worldwide.

Like “Tubular bells”, this album is divided into two movements, but unlike its multi-themed and rapidly-changing predecessor, “Hergest Ridge” involves economic use of the various themes and with more sophisticated musical development.

The first three records composed and released by Mike Oldfield rank among the best prog albums of all time. “Tubular bells” was the record-breaking debut album, followed by “Hergest Ridge” and "Ommadawn" (which I posted on March 28th). A quite repetitious set, one might object. Yet, a very nice and pleasant listen, considering that all of these albums date back to more than three decades ago.

My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.
