LIZARD - KING CRIMSON (1970)

Nel 1970 i King Crimson pubblicarono “Lizard”, secondo lavoro registrato da una formazione estemporanea che non ebbe mai modo di esibirsi dal vivo. Si trattò del primo - e unico - album al quale collaborarono ufficialmente il bassista-cantante Gordon Haskell e il batterista Andy McCulloch.

“Lizard” è indubbiamente l’album dei King Crismon maggiormente orientato verso il jazz, esito di quella tendenza che si era manifestata nel singolo “Cat food” (pubblicato anche come 45 giri) del secondo album della formazione “In the wake of Poseidon”. Una delle caratteristiche salienti di “Lizard” sono i testi immaginifici di Pete Sinfield, che in questo lavoro offre il meglio di sé.

Pur non essendo fra i preferiti dai fan, “Lizard” è uno dei migliori dischi in assoluto realizzati da Robert Fripp. Comprende cinque brani, e l’intero lato “B” del long-playing originale è occupato dalla suite “Lizard” - l'episodio migliore del disco, a mio parere, il quale rappresenta il brano più lungo (ad eccezione delle improvvisazioni) registrato dai King Crimson. La suite omonima è suddivisa in sezioni, una delle quali suddivisa a sua volta in sottosezioni - il tutto unito e “ricamato” dai testi che riportano al Medio Evo e che narrano di un principe e di una battaglia epica.

L’altro brano che preferisco è “Cirkus”, presumibilmente il più noto del disco, con il suo inizio caratterizzato dalla voce in sordina di Haskell che ben presto cede il passo alle note minacciose del mellotron, suonato dallo stesso Fripp.

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

“Lizard” is an album by King Crimson, released in 1970. It was the second recorded by a transitional line-up of the group that never had the opportunity to perform live. This would be the first (and only) album to feature bassist/vocalist Gordon Haskell and drummer Andy McCulloch as official members of the band.

Lizard is arguably King Crimson's most jazz-inflected album, developing further in the direction suggested by the track "Cat food" on “In the Wake of Poseidon” (also released as a single). King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield's contributions to Lizard include some of his most imaginitive and evocative work.

Though not highly reputed among fans, “Lizard” stand out as one of Robert Fripp’s best albums ever. The album consists of five tracks - the whole of the original LP’s side “B” being taken up by “Lizard” (the best track of the record, in my opinion): this is the longest composed (as distinct from improvised) piece ever recorded by King Crimson. This piece is divided into several sections and even subsections, with a narrative (running through its entirety) about a prince who takes part in an epic battle.

The other track I like better is "Cirkus" (perhaps the best-known track on the album), which begins with a hushed verse from Haskell before launching into a menacing theme played by Fripp on the mellotron.

My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.
