TARKUS (EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER) - 1971

“Tarkus” is a great, though a bit unbalanced album: one side is great, the other is a scattered collection of tunes that would have benefitted from further development. The first half of this album is probably one of the best things that EL&P ever did. The sprawling "Tarkus" suite is a keyboard tour-de-force, with Palmer and Lake also giving it all they've got.
Tarkus" is a massive seven-part 20-plus minute undertaking that, to my ears, may be the band's finest recording. The instrumental sections are filled with massive keyboard assaults from Emerson, anchored by Palmer's unique drumming. My favorite tracks in this suite are the two opening sections, but the real enjoyment comes during the instrumental sections like "Iconoclast".
The second half is more hit-and-miss, "Jeremy Bender" and “The only way” being my favourite tracks.
It’s a pity this album was filled with throw-away numbers such as “A time and a place” and “Are you ready Eddy?”. This is the reason why I’m giving it a ‘Very good’ vote. Otherwise, if side B had equalled at least the intensity of Brian Salad Surgery’s lengthy track “Karn Evil 9”, I would have voted ‘Excellent’.
