THE SEVEN SEASONS - CONCERTO GROSSO N° 3 (NEW TROLLS) - 2007

“The seven seasons” rappresenta il compimento di un ambizioso progetto iniziato dai New Trolls nel lontano 1971: “Concerto grosso n° 1”, seguito nel 1976 da “Concerto grosso n° 2”. Ad oltre trent’anni di distanza, i membri fondatori dei New Trolls Vittorio De Scalzi e Nico Di Palo realizzano dunque “The seven seasons - Concerto grosso n° 3”. Al loro fianco, oltre ad un gruppo di valenti musicisti (compresa una sezione d’archi), figurano Shel Shapiro (curatore dei testi in inglese) e Franz Di Cioccio (Premiata Forneria Marconi), produttore esecutivo.

Definire “The seven seasons” una mera operazione commerciale all’insegna della nostalgia è del tutto riduttivo. La formazione attuale comprende ottimi musicisti oltre, ovviamente, ai due membri fondatori dei New Trolls: Vittorio De Scalzi e Nico Di Palo. Quest’ultimo, purtroppo, si limita a prestare la sua voce - peraltro ancora ottima ed apprezzata dai fan - essendo impossibilitato a suonare la chitarra dopo un terribile incidente d’auto a causa del quale ha perso l’uso del braccio sinistro (lo scorso novembre ho assistito al loro concerto qui al Palazzetto dello Sport di Torino, ed è stato tristissimo vederlo in quelle condizioni, seduto su una sedia speciale per disabili e sorretto dai compagni del gruppo mentre lasciava il palco). L’album offre interessanti spunti creativi, oltre all’immancabile alternarsi di momenti orchestrali e spunti di rock puro, secondo la migliore tradizione dei precedenti “Concerto grosso”.

Il brano d’apertura, “The knowledge”, è di fatto una “quasi-fotocopia” del primo movimento di “Concerto Grosso n° 1”, mentre il seguente “Dance with the rain” è una splendida e delicata ballata basata sul canto, sulla chitarra classica e sul flauto di Vittorio De Scalzi. Il seguito dell’album non è da meno, ad esempio “Future joy” (con un assolo incantevole di violoncello), “One magic night” (tipica aria melodica italiana, nella quale la voce di Vittorio De Scalzi si alterna a quella della soprano Madelyn Monti, la quale canta in italiano), “The season of hope" (inizialmente duetto fra pianoforte e viola, quindi brano dal sapore progressive e jazzato) e, infine, “Simply angels” (a mio parere, il pezzo più azzeccato di tutto l’album, quello che maggiormente si avvicina al rock progressivo degli anni Settanta, con cambi di tempo e armonie vocali ottimamente distribuite).

Voto personale (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

“The seven seasons” is the natural accomplishment and completion of an early project started by New Trolls in 1971: “Concerto grosso n° 1”, followed by “Concerto grosso n° 2” (1976). More than 30 years later, New Trolls’ founding members Vittorio De Scalzi and Nico Di Palo have thus released “The seven seasons - Concerto grosso n° 3”, with the collaboration of a group of very good musicians (including a string section) as well as Shel Shapiro (English lyrics) and Premiata Forneria Marconi’s Franz Di Cioccio (executive producer).

It would be unfair define New Trolls’ last reunion just as a pure nostalgic and commercial operation. The present line-up features excellent musicians gathered around the founder member and leader Vittorio De Scalzi. The other founder member, Nico Di Palo, here is in the background: because of the consequences of a terrible car accident he can hardly move his left arm and he can’t play guitar anymore (it was painful to see him on stage - sitting on a special disabled person’s chair and helped by his mates to walk off the stage - when I went to the New Trolls' concert at Turin’s Palazzetto dello Sport last November), but New Troll’s fan still love him and his voice. You can find in this album a new creativity and an excellent interplay between rock instruments and orchestra, just like the previous “Concerto grosso” albums.

The opener “The knowledge” is an instrumental that reminds of Concerto Grosso n° 1, with an excellent interaction between the orchestra and the band, while the following “Dance with the rain” is a delicate and soft ballad featuring soaring vocals upon a classical guitar arpeggio and the flute by Vittorio De Scalzi interacting with the strings. The other tracks feature excellent music, i.e. “Future joy” (with its splendid cello performance), “One magic night” (a typically Italianate, beautiful and melodic air where Vittorio De Scalzi’s lead pop vocals are counterpointed by the operatic vocals of soprano Madelyn Monti , who sings in Italian), “The season of hope” (an interesting quiet duet between piano and viola that evolves into a more “progressive” and “jazzy” mood) and, finally, “Simply angels” (in my opinion the best track on this album and the one closer to the prog vein of the early 1970s, featuring shifting tempos and well balanced harmony vocals).

My personal mark (poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.
