ARISTOCRATICA (MATIA BAZAR) - 1984

VOTO PERSONALE (SCARSO / INSUFFICIENTE / SUFFICIENTE / BUONO / DISTINTO / OTTIMO / ECCELLENTE): ECCELLENTE!

On March 8th I posted “Tango”, an album by Matia Bazar (a famous, long-established Italian easy listening band). I said “easy listening band”; yet, the very “Tango” album (released in 1983) marked the new innovative direction taken by Matia Bazar. “Aristocratica” was released in 1984 and can be considered, in my opinion, the best album of the band, as well as the best achievement of Italian pop music in the 1980s.
As with the previous record, “Aristocratica” includes eight tracks, pure “techno-prog” style. They are essentially “songs”, yet the ultimate result is outstanding, also thanks to the original, ‘cryptic’ lyrics. By way of curiosity, it should be pointed that the Matia Bazar members used to listen, as they themselves acknowledged, to such stuff as Ultravox, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, and Peter Gabriel, at the time of making the album …..
“Aristocratica” sounds typically electronic and “synthetic’, with repeated, often hammering rhythm patterns and ‘otherwordly’ atmospheres. All of this is enriched by the vocal mastery of Antonella Ruggiero, whom I consider the most talented Italian vocalist over the past two decades (how can Laura Pausini compare with her???)
All the tracks are great – it is very hard to say which of them are the best: maybe, “Sulla scia”, “Ultima volontà”, “Milady”, “Aristocratica”, “Mosca Helzapoppin” and “Logica attenuante” (perhaps I should have specified which songs I like ‘less’).
MY PERSONAL MARK (VERY POOR / POOR / PASS / GOOD / FAIRLY GOOD / VERY GOOD / EXCELLENT): EXCELLENT!
