“Wonderwall Music” è il primo album solista di George Harrison, nonché colonna sonora del film “Wonderwall”. I brani in esso contenuti sono in pratica tutti strumentali e furono registrati in parte nel dicembre 1967, in Inghilterra, in parte il mese successivo, a Bombay (India). “Wonderwall music” rappresenta, inoltre, il primo lavoro solista prodotto da uno dei celebri “Fab-four”.
Come tutti sanno, i Beatles visitarono l’India nel 1968 e fu proprio George Harrison a rimanere colpito dalla musica, dalla cultura e, più in generale, dalla filosofia di quel lontano paese. Non a caso, gran parte dei musicisti che compaiono nell’album sono indiani, e lo stesso vale per gli strumenti utilizzati: sitar, tabla e pakhavaj (due strumenti a percussione), shanhai (strumento a fiato simile all’oboe), il tutto abbellito (o abbruttito, a seconda dei punti di vista …) dalla presenza degli immancabili strumenti tradizionali (basso, chitarra elettrica, tastiere, batteria).
Non è certo un album irresistibile questo “Wonderwall music”: gli appassionati di musica indiana lo apprezzeranno sicuramente, mentre per gli amanti del rock progressivo la motivazione principale per il suo ascolto può essere la pura curiosità. Inoltre, i singoli brani seguono rigorosamente la trama del film: si tratta di brani cortissimi (2 minuti o poco meno, in alcuni casi) che avrebbero meritato uno sviluppo più omogeneo. Già all’ascolto del brano d’apertura, l’ascoltatore “medio” potrebbe avvertire un senso di nausea e un forte stimolo a correre in bagno: tuttavia, non mancano i pezzi interessanti, in particolare “Red lady too”, “Dream scene” e, soprattutto, "Ski-ing" e "On the Bed", i quali avrebbero potuto fornire una discreta base per brani interessanti.
Se siete nostalgici degli anni che furono, in particolare dei fine anni Sessanta, con tutto il relativo corollario di filosofia hippy, “sballo” e amore per la musica indiana a base di sitar, questo disco potrà certamente interessarvi.

The songs are virtually all instrumental and were recorded partly in December 1967 in England, and the rest the following January (1968) in Bombay, India. Wonderwall Music is notable for being the first official solo album by one of the Beatles.
As everybody knows, the Beatles flew to India in 1968 and George Harrison was positively impressed by the music, culture and, in general, the philosophy of that country. Most of the musicians working on this album are from India, and so are the instruments used to record the tracks: sitar, tabla and pakhavaj (two types of drums), shanhai (a woodwind instrument similar to an oboe), all of which with the bass, electric guitar, keyboards and traditional drumming on the background.
This album is not at all an absolute ‘must’: Indian music lovers will surely appreciate it, whereas the general prog rock fan might be interested in it out of mere curiosity. Moreover, the tracks closely adhere to the story narrated on the film: they are quite short and have not been developed as they ought to. The average listener might get sick and tired just after listening to the opening track: in any case, there are some nice songs on this album: in particular, “Red lady too”, “Dream scene” and, above all, "Ski-ing" and "On the Bed", which might have provided a very good basis for creating excellent pieces of music.
If you fancy going back in time and drowning into the “hippy”, freak-out atmosphere of the late 1960s - and, above all, if you dig sitar-stuffed Indian music - I do recommend that you listen to this record.
