“Wind and wuthering” è il secondo album dei Genesis con Phil Collins nel ruolo di cantante, dopo la dipartita di Peter Gabriel nel 1975. Ma è anche l’ultimo album in studio con la presenza del chitarrista Steve Hackett.
Il titolo dell’album è ispirato a due temi: la parola "Wind" deriva da "The house of the four winds", titolo dato da Hackett ad un suo brano che, in seguito, sarebbe diventato il tranquillo intermezzo centrale di "Eleventh Earl of Mar"; "Wuthering" fa riferimento al celebre romanzo “Wuthering Heights” di Emily Bronte.
Secondo la mia sensibilità musicale, “Wind and wuthering” è l’ultimo “vero” album dei Genesis. Purtroppo, è, forse, il disco più trascurato della band: viene considerato inferiore ai lavori dell’era Gabriel e, al tempo stesso, non viene nemmeno sopravvalutato rispetto ai dischi pubblicati dopo la fuoriuscita di Hackett, e quando i fan discutono sul periodo di “intermezzo” della storia dei Genesis, i favori vanno inevitabilmente tutti a “Trick of the tail”. A dire la verità, anch’io preferisco “A trick of the tail”, tuttavia “Wind and wuthering” è l’album in cui i Genesis realizzarono appieno quelle sonorità che da anni avevano affinato. E chissà quale strada avrebbe intrapreso la band - e quali livelli avrebbe raggiunto - se Hackett non avesse deciso di andarsene.

To be honest, I do like “A trick of the tail” much better, yet “Wind and wuthering” is the album in which the band fully realized the sound they had been honing for so many years. It's hard to imagine how much they could have improved had Hackett not left after this album, but I guess that's something we'll never know.
