“Voyage of the acolyte”, primo album in assoluto del chitarrista dei Genesis Steve Hackett (da me postato l’11 maggio 2007), risale al 1975 e assomiglia di fatto alla produzione del periodo tipica del celebre quintetto britannico; al contrario, “Spectral mornings”, primo lavoro di Hackett dopo la sua dipartita dai Genesis, è decisamente più originale e interessante. Il disco riflette i numerosi interessi musicali del chitarrista, dalla classica alla musica cinese, con accessi ad una sorta di “space rock” progressivo. Gli otto brani che compongono la track list sono l’uno diverso dall’altro, contribuendo in tal modo alla realizzazione di un album davvero eterogeneo.
I pezzi migliori sono quelli strumentali: "Clocks - The angel of Mons" è una sorta di “space rock” a base di mellotron e pedaliere elettroniche Taurus (strumentazione elettronica di gran moda all’epoca). Nel brano finale, quello che da il titolo all’album, balza in evidenza la chitarra solista con le tipiche sonorità di Hackett, il tutto ancora una volta su un ricco tappeto sonoro di mellotron. "Tigermoth" inizia più o meno allo stesso modo di "Clocks" ma nella parte finale si trasforma in un cantato del tutto diverso, una sorta di melodia in stile Broadway - uno dei momenti migliori di tutto il disco, secondo me. Ecco una caratteristica peculiare degli album solisti di Steve Hackett: non si può prevedere cosa succederà, musicalmente parlando. Un altro ottimo strumentale è "Lost time in Cordoba", meraviglioso duetto di chitarra e flauto: un brano strano, dall’atmosfera tetra e particolare, che pare essere stato composto e registrato come se si trattasse di musica dei tempi passati. Infine, fra i brani cantati, la palma del migliore spetta, sempre secondo i miei gusti, a “The virgin and the gipsy”.
Gli altri pezzi sono tutto sommato piacevoli, pur non spiccando per originalità. In ogni caso un ottimo album, estremamente gradevole, senza momenti deboli.

Steve Hackett's first solo album, “Voyage of the acolyte” (which I posted on May 11th, 2007) came out in 1975 and is a rather Genesis-like affair, but “Spectral mornings”, his first solo album after leaving Genesis is a more original work. It reflects Hackett's interest in various styles of music, from classical to Cantonese music. There is even a little of Steve's own brand of space/prog rock on here. Each track is different, so this is a very diversified album.
The best tracks on this album are definitely the instrumentals. "Clocks - The angel of Mons" is an excellent sort of creepy space rock tune loaded with mellotron and ominous Taurus pedal melodies. The title track is a nice bittersweet sounding instrumental in which Hackett's shimmering electric guitar melodies take center stage over a dreamy mellotron backdrop. It's a beautiful track. "Tigermoth" starts out as another dark mellotron/Taurus pedal instrumental similar to "Clocks," but then suddenly changes to a completely different kind of vocal piece that sounds like a Broadway tune - one of the heights of the entire album, in my opinion. This is typical of Hackett's solo work. You never really know what's going to happen next, whether it be from album to album or within a single song. Another good instrumental is "Lost time in Cordoba." This is a very nice classical guitar/flute duet. It's an odd track, however, because the entire piece has some sort of aural haze placed over it, which makes it sound a little strange. It's almost as if it was made to sound like it came from a very old record. “The virgin and the gipsy” sounds like the best of the album’s non-instrumental pieces.
There are a couple more songs on this album which are quite pleasant, but not extremely interesting. There's not a bad track on here, though. The entire album is completely listenable.
