L’album d’esordio del supergruppo Asia (John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes) porta lo stesso nome della band, ed è considerato da molti (fra i quali il sottoscritto) il loro lavoro migliore. Nel 1981, John Wetton e Steve Howe (reduce dalla recente dipartita dagli Yes) iniziarono a lavorare al progetto “Asia”. A loro si unirono ben presto Carl Palmer (degli E. L. & P.) e Geoff Downes (ex membro dei Buggles e degli stessi Yes cui apparteneva Steve Howe).
L’album omonimo d’esordio (che posto oggi) uscì nel 1982 e, sulla scia dei successoni a 45 giri “Heat of the moment” e “Only time will tell”, ebbe un enorme successo commerciale, raggiungendo i primi posti nelle classifiche di molti paesi (Stati Uniti inclusi). I brani di questo album dimostrano la loro freschezza a distanza di ormai 25 anni, e vengono tuttora proposti da molte emittenti che trasmettono musica rock. Tuttavia, i critici e molti fan di rock progressivo rimasero delusi da questo album, la cui musica assomigliava troppo, a quanto pare, al pop più commerciale.
Che questo sia vero o meno, “Asia” è comunque da ascoltare, e molti dei suoi brani (es. “Only time will tell”, “Sole survivor”, “Cutting it fine”, “Without you”) rappresentano esempi di buon rock.

The first album released by arena progressive rock group Asia (John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes) bears the same band name and is considered to be their best one. Founding members John Wetton and Steve Howe (having come out of the break-up of Yes in early 1981) started working and writing in 1981 and were subsequently joined by Carl Palmer (from E. L. & P.) and Geoff Downes (who had previously worked with Buggles and Yes themselves.
Asia’s eponymous album (which I’m posting today) was released in 1982 and, boosted by famous singles “Heat of the moment” and “Only time will tell”, enjoyed massive commercial success, becoming a Number 1 hit in many countries (including the U.S.A.). The tracks from the Asia debut have stood the test of time and are played on classic rock stations throughout the world today. Yet, Asia’s first album was considered disappointing by music critics and many fans of traditional progressive rock, who found the music closer to radio-friendly pop.
In any case, “Asia” is worth a listen, as many of its tracks (e.g. “Only time will tell”, “Sole survivor”, “Cutting it fine”, “Without you”) are no doubt very good examples of rock music.

LE ORME IN CONCERTO (LE ORME) - 1974 (RE-POST)

Nel 1974, Le Orme pubblicarono “In concerto”, un disco che segna un’epoca in quanto si tratta del primo disco live di un gruppo rock italiano. La qualità sonora lascia a desiderare, e gli stessi componenti de Le Orme erano contrari all’uscita dell’album - album che, a quanto pare, risulterebbe frutto di una registrazione “improvvisata” di un tecnico al seguito della band.

Il lato “A” del disco originale comprende due inediti: “Truck of fire” (Parti 1 e 2), il primo interamente strumentale, il secondo cantato in inglese. Il lato “B” propone invece alcuni classici del trio veneziano: in particolare, spicca il brano inedito “Preludio a Era inverno”.

Nel complesso, un disco coraggioso e interessante (ripeto, qualità sonora a parte), il quale viene a completare i miei post dedicati al periodo migliore de Le Orme (vedi “Felona e Sorona, postato il 15 marzo 2007; “Collage”, postato il 2 aprile 2007; “Uomo di pezza”, postato l’8 maggio 2007; “Contrappunti”, postato il 14 settembre 2007).

Le Orme, one of the most famous Italian prog rock bands, released “In concerto” in 1974 - a milestone album, due to its being the first live album ever released by an Italian rock band. It is a pity the sound recording quality leaves a great deal to be desired, and the band members themselves were not very keen on publishing this record, which would apparently be the result of an “improvised” recording made by a sound engineer following the band.

Side “A” of the original record includes two previously unpublished tracks: “Truck of fire” (Parts 1 & 2), the former being an all-instrumental piece, the latter being sung in English. Side “B” contains some of the most famous songs of this Venetian trio, plus a nice instrumental never released before: “Preludio a Era inverno”.

All things considered, “Orme in concerto” is a “daring” and very interesting record (I repeat, apart from its sound recording quality), which completes the series of my posts dedicated to Le Orme at their best (see “Felona e Sorona, posted on March 15th 2007; “Collage”, posted on April 2nd 2007; “Uomo di pezza”, posted on May 8th 2007; and “Contrappunti”, posted on September 14th 2007).

HAERMEA (RICCARDO ZAPPA) - 1982

Riccardo Zappa è un chitarrista italiano (tuttora attivo) con alle spalle una carriera ultratrentennale brillante, seppur non riconosciuta a dovere. A conferma di ciò, Riccardo Zappa è risultato migliore chitarrista acustico italiano per cinque anni consecutivi, dopodiché è stato dichiarato non più votabile. Curiosamente, il suo esordio nel mondo della musica risale al lontano 1969, anno in cui compose la canzone “Le ciliegie”, interpretata dall’allora giovanissima Fiorella Mannoia.
“Haermea” (pubblicato nel 1982) è il suo quarto album, dopo i primi due capolavori acustici "Celestion" (1977) e "Chatka" (1978) ed il successivo "Trasparenze" (1980). Non saprei nemmeno io come definire quest’album: l’ascolto del brano d’apertura “440 Hertz” - un pezzo “massiccio”, una sorta di rock “semi-duro” per chitarra acustica - può trarre in inganno l’ascoltatore occasionale, dando l’impressione di un “normale” disco rock. Normale un paio di maroni, in quanto si tratta di uno strumentale a dir poco originale! Detto ciò, l’album prosegue sempre all’insegna delle chitarre di Riccardo, con un alternarsi di musica classica, stile finger-picking, ballate pop melodiche, intermezzi di rock sostenuto e numerosi richiami al miglior rock progressivo (alcuni momenti ricordano gli strumentali più eterei del chitarrista dei Genesis Steve Hackett). Il brano conclusivo “Ursa Major” riconduce magicamente l’ascoltatore al pezzo di apertura, ovvero, al piacere di ascoltare l’album di nuovo da capo. Infatti, “Haermea” va ascoltato più volte per apprezzare al meglio i suoi dettagli e, soprattutto, la maestria di questo chitarrista italiano - un perfetto sconosciuto per molti amanti della musica progressive (e non solo).

Riccardo Zappa is an Italian guitarist (still active) boasting a more than thirty year long career and a list of produced albums, the importance of which has, in my opinion, not been duly acknowledged. Despite this, Riccardo Zappa was voted the best Italian acoustic guitar player for five years in a row. Curiously, he made his debut in the music scene in 1969, when he composed a song entitled “Le ciliegie”, sung by then-teenager Italian vocalist Fiorella Mannoia.
“Haermea” (released in 1982) is Riccardo Zappa’s fourth album following the first acoustic masterpieces "Celestion" (1977) and "Chatka" (1978) and the subsequent album "Trasparenze" (1980). “Haermea” is difficult to label: casual listeners might be cheated when they listen to the opening track “440 Hertz”: a “hard” piece of music, sort of a “semi-hard rock” instrumental based on acoustic and electric guitars. In fact, they might think to be about to listen to an ordinary “rock” album: well, “ordinary” is not at all the right adjective for “Haermea”. The album progresses into a soft combination of classical music, finger-picking guitar style, pop ballads, powerful rock instrumental sections and, above all, some hints to prog rock (Riccardo Zappa’s playing sometimes reminds me of Genesis’ Steve Hackett’s guitar playing style). The closing track “Ursa Major” brings the listener back to the opening track, i.e. it makes you want to listen to the album once again. In fact, “Haermea” should be listened to several times in order to appreciate its elegant details and, above all, the musical skills of Riccardo Zappa, an Italian artist who is little known to many fans of progressive music (and of music at large).

PETER GABRIEL II (P. GABRIEL) - 1978

“Peter Gabriel II” è il secondo album solista di Peter Gabriel, indimenticabile cantante e compositore dei Genesis. Si tratta del secondo di quattro album recanti, come titolo, il solo nome dell’artista britannico: per tale motivo, “Peter Gabriel II” è noto anche come “Scratch”. Degna di nota è la presenza di Robert Fripp, l’eccentrico leader dei King Crimson, nella duplice veste di produttore e di chitarrista (inconfondibile, al riguardo, la sua impronta nel pezzo intitolato “Exposure”, dove Fripp si cimenta con le sue micidiali Frippertronics).
Pur non raggiungendo i livelli artistici (e di vendite) dell’album d’esordio, questo secondo lavoro solista di Gabriel annovera alcuni brani di ottima fattura, quali “On the air”, “Mother of violence”, “White shadow” e “Indigo”.

Voto personale (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto/Ottimo.

“Peter Gabriel II” is the second solo album by Genesis’ former vocalist-composer Peter Gabriel. Often referred to as “Scratch”, this album is the second of four with the same eponymous title and features King Crimson’s Robert Fripp as producer and guest guitarist, whose influence on the album is evident in the use of Frippertronics on the track entitled "Exposure."
Though not being so nice and not selling as well as the artist’s debut album, “Peter Gabriel II” includes a few really lovely songs, such as the opener “On the air”, “Mother of violence”, “White shadow” and “Indigo”.

IL SOGNO (ZAUBER) - 1978

“Il sogno” è l’unico album pubblicato dagli Zauber, gruppo semisconosciuto torinese (ebbene sì, della mia città natale) che abbina il genere barocco progressivo, il classico all’italiana e la musica medievale. Il disco è caratterizzato dalla presenza di melodie semplici ma accattivanti, lunghi pezzi strumentali e arrangiamenti curati, grazie ai quali la strumentazione tipica dei gruppi rock viene arricchita da xilofoni, glockenspiel, flauto, armonica, viola, violoncello, flauto dolce e oboe. Sebbene i richiami ai Jethro Tull e ai King Crimson più melodici siano tutt’altro che rari, “Il sogno” presenta brani più immediati e decisamente barocchi. In ogni caso, un album da ascoltare e assaporare. Un mio parere personale: con l’aiuto di una post-produzione di alto livello, eliminando quel tradizionale - e, a volte, fastidioso - cantato all’italiana stile anni Settanta, gli Zauber avrebbero potuto indubbiamente ottenere maggiore gloria. Ma, lo ripeto, si tratta di un giudizio del tutto opinabile.

“Il sogno” is the only one album released by Zauber, an unknown prog rock band from Turin, Italy (yeah, my home town) combining progressive Baroque, Italian classical music and Medieval music. The album features simple, yet appealing tunes, long instrumental suites and lush arrangements in which the conventional four-piece rock group instruments are supplemented by xylophone, glockenspiel, flute, harmonica, viola, cello, recorder and oboe. Quite close to the Jethro Tull’s and King Crimson’s style, “Il sogno” provides a set of more immediate, Baroque pieces of music. All things considered, an album worth to be listened to and discovered. In my opinion, Zauber could have achieved more ambitious goals if only they had been supported by more accurate and experienced post-producers and had done away with the typical - and, sometimes, fastidious - singing reminiscent of the 1970s Italian easy listening pop music. But this is just an opinion of mine.
