LONDON CALLING (THE CLASH) - 1979

Pubblicato nel dicembre 1979, “London calling” è il terzo album (originariamente un doppio LP) dei “Clash”, gruppo britannico di punk-rock. Tuttavia, in questo lavoro il punk vero e proprio ha ceduto il passo a stili musicali diversi quali lo ska, il pop, il soul, il rockabilly e il reggae. Inoltre, i testi vertono su argomenti di stampo sociale, quali la disoccupazione, i conflitti razziali e i problemi della tossicodipendenza fra i giovani.
Oltre ad aver venduto circa 2 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo, “London calling” ha ottenuto critiche favorevoli sia dal pubblico che dagli addetti ai lavori; non a caso, la rivista Rolling Stone lo ha classificato addirittura all’ottavo posto fra i 500 migliori album rock di tutti i tempi. In ogni caso, posizione più posizione meno, rappresenta uno degli album di rock più originali e “genuini” di sempre.

“London calling” is the third album (originally, a double long-playing record) by English punk-rock band “The Clash”. Released in December 1979, it represented a change in The Clash's musical style and featured elements of ska, pop, soul, rockabilly and reggae music. The album's subject matter included social issues such as unemployment, racial conflicts and drug use among the young.
The album has sold over two million copies worldwide, receiving highly positive reviews and being ranked at number eight on the Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It has since been widely accepted as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

THE THING AT THE NURSERY ROOM WINDOW (PETER LANG) - 1973

Molto, molto tempo fa, un visitatore del mio blog mi aveva chiesto di postare “The thing at the nursery room window”, un album di Peter Lang, cantante-chitarrista folk-blues americano di cui non avevo mai sentito parlare prima di allora.
A distanza di tempo, ecco l’album (pubblicato nel 1973): una delicata raccolta di brani per chitarra e voce, in perfetto stile folk-country con tecnica del finger-picking espressa al meglio. Non è certo il mio genere preferito; tuttavia, l’ascolto è piacevole, soprattutto se ci si immagina sdraiati su un prato di campagna, ospiti di un agroturismo.

Voto personale (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

A long, long time ago, a visitor to this blog of mine asked me if I could post “The thing at the nursery room window”, an album by Peter Lang, an American folk-blues guitarist-singer of whom I had not had any previous knowledge.
After such a long time, here is the album. Published in 1973, “The thing at the nursery room window” is a nice collection of songs for acoustic guitar and vocals only, rendered in a typical folk-country style based on the finger-picking technique. Well, this is not my favourite gender of course; in any case, the album is a nice listen, especially if you fancy yourself lying on a quiet country field on a summer vacation at a tourist’s farm.

My personal mark (poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.

ESSERE O NON ESSERE (IL VOLO) - 1975 (RE-POST)

Possiamo riconoscere il supergruppo Il Volo, band che a cavallo tra il 1974 e il 1975 diede vita a due discreti album (“Il Volo” e “Essere o non essere”), in un mix di melodia, sinfonia e qualche accenno fusion.
Forti di un nucleo di musicisti di provata esperienza, Il Volo è uno di quei gruppi che hanno avuto un discreto riscontro fra gli amanti del genere, che rivedevano in loro una forma musicale più innovativa rispetto alle colonne portanti del panorama progressive italiano di allora (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso e P.F.M.).
Oggi voglio postare il secondo - e ultimo - loro disco, i cui brani migliori sono, a mio parere, “Gente in amore”, “Svegliandomi con te alle 6 di mattino” e “Canti e suoni” (con un finale davvero irresistibile).

“Il Volo” is an Italian supergroup (including, among the others, former Formula 3 members Alberto Radius and Gabriele Lorenzi) who released two fairly good albums (“Il Volo” and “Essere o non essere?”) between 1974 and 1975, both of which are characterized by a well-chosen blend of pleasant tunes, symphonic music and fusion patterns.
Relying on a line-up consisting of performers of tried skill, Il Volo achieved some success with the rock fans who enjoyed their sound – a more innovating feature compared with the major Italian progressive bands of that time (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, P.F.M.).
Today I'm posting their second - and last - album, the best tracks of which (in my opinion) include “Gente in amore”, “Svegliandomi con te alle 6 di mattino” and “Canti e suoni” (the ending section of which I consider to be irresistible).

SCOLOPENDRA (ALLUMINOGENI) - 1972 (RE-POST)

Un visitatore del blog mi ha chiesto di postare nuovamente alcuni album con link cimiti. Ecco il primo di questi re-post, corredato dei commenti originali: “Scolopendra”, degli Alluminogeni (postato il 25 giugno 2007).

A visitor to my blog asked me to post again some albums, the links of which proved to be bad ones, This is the first re-post, accompanied by the original comments: “Scolopendra”, by Alluminogeni (original post: June 25th 2007).

Dopo quattro singoli (orientati alla musica commerciale) pubblicati fra il 1970 e il 1971, il trio torinese “Gli Alluminogeni” realizzò nel 1972 questo "Scolopendra", unico album della formazione che ben presto sarebbe giunta allo scioglimento.
Un album interessante nell’ambito del prog italiano dell’epoca, tuttavia non al punto da reggere il confronto con i capolavori di quel periodo pubblicati da gruppi quali Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, Premiata Forneria Marconi, ecc.
Un disco decente, tutto sommato - non "essenziale", ma comunque degno di un ascolto. NOTA: Considerando che si tratta di un “concept”, ho ritenuto opportuno postarlo in versione integrale (“unsplit”).

After releasing four easy-listening singles in 1970 and 1971, “Alluminogeni” (a trio from Turin, Italy) made their only album “Scolopendra” in 1972, before disbanding in a short time.
Quite an interesting album within the Italian progressive scene of the 1970s, which cannot in any case stand comparison with contemporary Italian prog masterpieces, such as the ones released by Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, Premiata Forneria Marconi, etc.
All in all, a fairly good album - not an essential one, yet a record that is worth being listening to. NOTE: Considering the “concept” nature of the work, the latter has been posted “unsplit”.

ABRUZZO, RISORGI!

Una mattina d'estate di molti anni fa scattai questa foto sulla spiaggia di Roseto degli Abruzzi. Pensando a quello che è successo ieri, provo sincero dolore per le genti di quella terra - genti che ho conosciuto e apprezzato per le loro innumerevoli qualità, soprattutto umane.

L'unica cosa che posso fare è essere vicino a loro con il cuore. Farei sicuramente una donazione in denaro, se fossi ricco: purtroppo non è il mio caso.

I media hanno mostrato troppe immagini di distruzione nelle ultime 36 ore. Preferisco ricordare quei posti con questa splendida, seppur malinconica, foto del sole che sorge sul mare di Roseto.

ABRUZZO, DESTATI E RISOLLEVATI CON ORGOGLIO!

I took this photo of a beach at Roseto degli Abruzzi one summer morning many years ago. I feel truly sad when I think about the earthquake that shook the region of Abruzzo and caused a lot of dead among the local people.

The only thing I can do is share the feelings of grief and compassion. I would surely donate money if I were a rich person: this is not my case, unfortunately.

Italian newspapers and TVs have broadcast quite a lot of images and death and destruction over the past 36 hours. I prefer to remember the places I visited in Abruzzo by posting the lovely (yet, melancholic) picture of the sun rising on the sea off the Roseto beach.
