A TRICK OF THE TAIL (GENESIS) - 1976

La qualità del primo album dei Genesis successivo alla dipartita di Peter Gabriel colse tutti di sorpresa (me compreso), soprattutto se si considera che era trascorso un anno e mezzo dalla pubblicazione del capolavoro “The lamb lies down on Broadway”. Fin dal brano di apertura “Dance on a volcano”, si ha l’impressione di ascoltare i migliori Genesis, e la voce di Phil Collins assomiglia incredibilmente a quella di Peter Gabriel. E il secondo pezzo (la splendida ballata “Entangled”, composta da Tony Banks e Steve Hackett) rappresenta, secondo me, uno dei brani migliori in assoluto della band: atmosfere da sogno (in effetti, il testo parla proprio del sonno e dei sogni), con chitarre acustiche e mellotron che fanno di “Entangled” uno dei pezzi più affascinanti del celebre quintetto (in seguito quartetto e - alla fine, e miseramente - trio).

Basta dunque ascoltare questi primi due pezzi per poter affermare che “A trick of the tail” si colloca ai massimi livelli della produzione genesisiana, al pari di “Foxtrot”, Selling England by the pound” e “The lamb lies down on Broadway”. Non servono altre parole: questo disco è imperdibile!

Con dei brani di così squisita fattura e bellezza, il mio voto personale non può che essere:

The quality of Genesis’ first post-Peter Gabriel album astonished everyone (including myself), especially coming out after an 18-month gap following their masterpiece “The lamb lies down on Broadway”. From the very opening number, "Dance on a volcano," you feel as if you were listening to one of the best Genesis records, and Phil Collins sounds more like Peter Gabriel than Gabriel himself did. The second track (Tony Banks and Steve Hackett's "Entangled") is one of the prettiest songs the group had recorded up to that time: a gossamer-textured piece about sleep and dreaming in which a strummed acoustic guitar makes its most prominent appearance ever on a Genesis song.

So, after listening to the first two tracks of the album, no one could object to stating that “A trick of the tail” ranks among Genesis’ best – in the same league as “Foxtrot”, Selling England by the pound” and “The lamb lies down on Broadway”. No more words. Just listen to "A trick of the tail": it's an absolute prog rock must!

All the tracks are excellent; therefore - and accordingly, my personal mark is:

Esattamente vent'anni fa veniva pubblicato questo album - che se in tutta Italia lo hanno ascoltato 1000 persone sono anche troppe ... (ma questo lo penso io).

Paul Roland, musicista e scrittore invaghito di letteratura ottocentesca, esoterismo e musica classica, ha infatti l'aria di essere il tipico artista che si trova sperduto nel secolo sbagliato, nel posto sbagliato e che, forse, fa anche il mestiere sbagliato.

Premesso ciò, perché postare allora il suo album "A cabinet of curiosities"?

Semplicemente perché è un'opera di rara bellezza. Come definire lo stile di Roland? Neofolk-psichedelico-gotico .... Mah, chissà. Strumenti acustici e archi si amalgamano, dando vita a pezzi di breve durata, intimisti e riflessivi. Su tutti, secondo il mio gusto, svettano "Wyndham hill", "Walter, the occultist", "Madhouse" e "Jumbee".

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

This album, which is likely to have been listened to, in Italy, by some 1,000 persons altogether (or, at least, this is what I think) was released exactly twenty years ago.

A musician and writer fond of Nineteenth-Century literature, exoticism and classical music, Paul Roland looks like the typical artist living and being lost in the wrong century and the wrong place and, perhaps, doing the wrong job.

That being stated, why post his album "A cabinet of curiosities", then? Simply because it's an album of rare beauty. How could one label Paul Roland's music? Gothic-psychedelic-neofolk ... Who can tell? Acoustic instruments and strings blend with one another, giving rise to brief, thoughtful and broody songs. Best tracks (in my opinion): "Wyndham hill", "Walter, the occultist", "Madhouse" and "Jumbee".

My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.

1975: l'anno dell'ultima tournee dei Genesis con Peter Gabriel. Ero presente al loro concerto qui a Torino, il 21 marzo di quell'anno. Un concerto indimenticabile - anche per le massicce dosi di gas lacrimogeno, sparato dalla "pula" per tenere a bada gli "Autonomi" che stazionavano fuori dal Palasport e pretendevano l’ingresso gratis - gas che riuscì a penetrare comunque all'interno del Palazzetto.

Eccomi quindi a postare la prima parte del concerto tenuto a Wembley (Londra) in occasione di quella stessa tournee.

ATTENZIONE! MINITAROCCATA! Il brano "The waiting room" non è dal vivo: si tratta, infatti, della versione in studio, inserita probabilmente per la difficoltà di riprodurre live la massiccia dose di elettronica presente. Non mi pare serio, non è da Genesis. In ogni caso, la versione del concerto in mio possesso è tale quale ve la presento.

ON APRIL 9TH I POSTED A LIVE ALBUM BY GENESIS, THE LINK OF WHICH PROVED TO BE A BAD ONE.

I HAD PROMISED TO POST AGAIN THIS ALBUM AS WELL AS A FEW OTHER ALBUMS THAT PRESENTED THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS THE FIRST OF SUCH RE-UPLOADS. FOR THE SAKE OF CONVENIENCE, I'M ALSO ADDING BELOW THE FULL DETAILS OF THE ORIGINAL POST.

In 1975, Genesis went on tour with Peter Gabriel in the ranks for the last time. And I went to the concert they held in Turin, on March 21st. An unforgettable concert - also due to the massive doses of tear gas the cops shot to dispell the “Autonomi”, i.e. the extreme left-wing protesters standing outside the concert venue and asking for free admission to the show - yet, the tear gas penetrated into the building.

Today I'm posting the first part of the concert Genesis held at Wembley, London, on their 1975 tour.

WARNING! FAKE LIVE TRACK! The song entitled "The waiting room" is not performed live. In fact, it sounds exactly the same as the studio recording version that appeared on "The lamb lies down on Broadway" - maybe due to the large amount of intricate electronic effects it includes. Very strange. That's not Genesis' way of doing things ... In any case, I am posting this concert "as is".

Con questo post inauguro una serie di album dal vivo "non ufficiali" dei Led Zeppelin, dei quali, purtroppo, non potrò fornire il ben che minimo dettaglio informativo.

Verosimilmente, l'album "Led Zeppelin Live Shows 1" risale a esibizioni all'inizio della carriera (anche se qualche brano non pare essere dal vivo) di questo formidabile gruppo di hard-rock, a mio parere, maestri nel loro genere. Fra l'altro, agli appassionati dei Led ricordo il mio posto del 29 aprile ("Led Zeppelin III").

Voto personale (qualità sonora a parte) (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

This is the first of a series of posts dedicated to Led Zeppelin "unofficial" live shows, of which I am not able, unfortunately, to provide the slightest informative detail.

"Led Zeppelin Live Shows 1" is likely to date back to the early shows (though not all the tracks are live) of this outstanding hard-rock band which, in my opinion, ranks at the top of hard rock listing. Among other things, I wish to remind all the Led Zeppelin fans that I posted the third album of the band on April 29th.

My personal mark (apart from sound recording quality) (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.
