Pubblicato nel 1975, “Chocolate kings” è un ottimo album di rock progressivo della P.F.M. (Premiata Forneria Marconi), l’ultimo vero ‘pezzo forte’ del gruppo italiano durante gli anni Settanta, al quale farà seguito l’inesorabile fase discendente. Fu anche il primo disco a dividere i fan della P.F.M., soprattutto a causa dell’introduzione del cantante solista Bernardo Lanzetti, la cui voce, fra l’altro, ricorda non poco quella di Peter Gabriel.
Quanto all’esecuzione musicale, “Chocolate kings” rappresenta l’apice tecnico della band, a mio parere. In particolare sono due i brani più significativi al riguardo: “From under' e “Harlequin”, due dei pezzi migliori mai composti dal gruppo, anche se “Out of the roundabout” (uno dei classici durante le esibizioni dal vivo) non può certo dirsi da meno.
Certamente, “Chocolate kings” è meno ‘romantico’ degli album precedenti della P.F.M.; in ogni caso, la musica che propone è di primissimo livello, sia per la resa dei musicisti sia per la presenza di parti melodiche piacevoli. Un album dirock progressivo sinfonico di alta qualità, sicuramente apprezzato dai fan di Genesis e E. L. & P. Le tastiere spiccano, come al solito, sul resto (comprese alcune deliziose parti di organo Hammond); inoltre, il violino di Mauro Pagani aggiunge un tocco particolare al sound dell’album, integrando le consuete chitarre, il basso e la batteria. L’unico punto debole è il brano conclusivo: “Paper charms”, un pezzo un po’ troppo lungo che stenta a mantenere lo standard qualitativo dei quattro brani precedenti. Peccato che proprio il pezzo conclusivo sia quello meno convincente.

Released in 1975, “Chocolate kings” is an excellent prog album by P.F.M. (Premiata Forneria Marconi), the last great contribution by the band during the Seventies, just before entering the downfall phase. It was also P.F.M.’s first album to divide fans – the main reason for this having been the introduction of a stable vocalist, Bernardo Lanzetti, whose voice reminds me Peter Gabriel’s singing quite a lot.
As far as musicianship is concerned, “Chocolate kings” is where the band reaches the apex, in my opinion. In particular, “From under' and “Harlequin” are two of the best pieces P.F.M. ever composed, together with “Out of the roundabout” (one of the band’s classics during their live performances).
This album is probably less ‘romantic’ than its predecessor, yet the music is still very good: the technical performance is absolutely outstanding and there are a lot of melodies in the songs. “Chocolate kings” is symphonic prog rock of the highest quality that fans of Genesis and E. L. & P. are sure to enjoy. The standard of musicianship is excellent, with keyboards well to the fore (including some wonderful Hammond organ playing); furthermore, violin also adds a nice edge to the sound, complimenting the usual guitar, bass and drums. The only weak track is the ending one: “Paper charms”, a lengthy piece that fails to maintain the standard of the earlier pieces and ends the album poorly.
