ALCHEMY – AN INDEX OF POSSIBILITIES (DAVID SYLVIAN) - 1985

“Alchemy – An index of possibilities” è il secondo album solista di David Sylvian, pubblicato nel 1985. Un album suggestivo, con una forte impronta etnica ed orientale e, al tempo stesso, con evidenti agganci al rock teutonico. In particolare, la mini-suite "Words with the shaman" offre numerosi spunti ispirati al rock elettronico progressivo tedesco, forse per via della collaborazione compositiva offerta da Holger Czukay, ex-componente dei Can. Tuttavia, a dire il vero, l’intera suite è meglio definibile come una creazione ‘new age’ anziché progressive o ambient; ciò non toglie che il risultato finale sia impeccabile.
Il resto dell’album è permeato da suoni mistici, quasi una sorta di rituali mantrici, ovvero suoni disarmonici (nello stile di Stockhausen), atmosfere ‘spaziali’ (soprattutto in “Steel cathedrals”, il finale epico del disco) e molto altro materiale sonoro evocativo.
Come ho ribadito spesso ultimamente, sono incline alla meditazione da un po’ di tempo a questa parte e, di conseguenza, preferisco ascoltare musica tranquilla e meditativa. Detto ciò, ritengo che “Alchemy – An index of possibilities” sia un album di tutto rispetto, degno di fare parte di una discografia di rock progressivo che si rispetti, anche grazie ad alcuni nomi di prestigio che figurano fra i musicisti che hanno collaborato con Sylvian (ad esempio, Robert Fripp e Ryuichi Sakamoto).
Voto personale: Ottimo.

“Alchemy – An index of possibilities” is David Sylvian’s second solo album, released in 1985. It is an athmospheric album with a strong ethnic/oriental flavour but with many relations with krautrock, too. In particular, the mini-suite "Words with the shaman" has, maybe because of the effort of the former Can pop band’s Holger Czukay, a strong connection with it. But, to say the truth, this whole suite is probably more ‘new age’ than progressive or ambient; in any case, it is a really good piece of music.
The rest of the album is imbued with sort of mystic, mantric tunes, disharmonic sounds (in the style of Stockhausen), space rock (especially in “Steel cathedrals”, the album’s epic) and much, much more evocative stuff.
I have turned quite meditative lately and, as I have pointed out several times, I have become addicted to meditative music. Yet, I think “Alchemy – An index of possibilities” is an outstanding album that deserves a place in every prog discography, also due to some of the famous artists that contributed to making it (e.g. Robert Fripp, Ryuichi Sakamoto).
My personal mark: Very good.
