MURALES (ARTI E MESTIERI) - 2000

Gli Arti e Mestieri sono un gruppo storico del progressive e del jazz-rock mondiale, guidati dal tastierista Beppe Crovella e dal batterista Furio Chirico. Formatisi nel 1974 per opera di Furio Chirico, ex batterista dei The Trip e de I Ragazzi del Sole, Beppe Crovella (dai Mystics) e da 4 musicisti di Torino, sopraggiunti dal gruppo "Sogno Di Archimede", ossia Arturo Vitale, Gigi Venegoni, Giovanni Vigliar e Marco Gallesi, il gruppo è tuttora in attività.
“Murales”, pubblicato nel 2000, rappresenta il tipico album ‘reunion’ dei gruppi rock scioltisi in un primo momento e riformatisi successivamente. Da notare, infatti, il rientro del chitarrista torinese Gigi Venegoni, musicista dalla tecnica sopraffina (anche se, del resto, tutti i componenti degli Arti e Mestieri sono ottimi esecutori). Un album che, più che progressivo, strizza l’occhio al jazz ed alla musica fusion.
Voto personale: Ottimo.
N.B. Questo post non comprende, purtroppo, il brano “Strade” (n° 12 dell’album), il cui file mp3 è inspiegabilmente corrotto. Me ne scuso davvero, ma il disco ho voluto postarlo lo stesso, perché è davvero bello.

Arti e Mestieri are a historic band of progressive and jazz-rock music of world renown, led by keyboardist Beppe Crovella and drummer Furio Chirico. They formed in 1974 on the initiative of Furio Chirico, former drummer with Italian bands The Trip and I Ragazzi del Sole, of Beppe Crovella (former Mystics member) and of four musicians from Turin (Arturo Vitale, Gigi Venegoni, Giovanni Vigliar and Marco Gallesi) from "Sogno Di Archimede".
“Murales” 2000 provides a typical example of reunion album: mention should be made, to this regard, to Gigi Venegoni, the guitarist who joined again the band after more than 20 years – a highly skilled musician (and, among other things, all Arti e Mestieri members are excellent performers). The album sounds progressive of course, even though one ought to properly define it as a jazz/fusion disc.
My personal mark: Very good.
N.B. I am sorry to inform you that the posted album does not include, unfortunately, the song “Strade” (# 12 in the original track list), the mp3 file of which has gone corrupt. I humbly beg your pardon for that, but I wanted to post this album all the same, because it is really good.

THE COLOUR OF SPRING (TALK TALK) - 1986

Terzo album dei Talk Talk, “The colour of spring” ha visto la pubblicazione nel 1986 ed è stato l’album più venduto della band britannica capitanata da Mark Hollis.
Pur non essendo un gruppo prog nel vero senso del termine, ho sempre ammirato i Talk Talk, postando in questo blog i loro album “It’s my life”, “Spirits of Eden” e “Laughing stock”. Questi ultimi due, in particolare, sono considerati importanti dai critici, i quali hanno sfornato, al riguardo una nuova definizione di genere musicale: post-rock.
Non so nemmeno io per quale motivo i Talk Talk mi abbiano colpito allora – e ancora oggi amo ascoltarli. Forse perché hanno segnato un momento importante della mia vita: il passaggio dalla giovinezza alla maturità (anche se, a volte, mi domando cosa si intenda per ‘maturità’ …)
Ad ogni modo, questo “The colour of spring” non è niente male e si ascolta piacevolmente.
Voto personale: Distinto.

Released in 1986, “The colour of spring” is Talk Talk's third album and was became the band's highest selling studio album.
Far from being a proper prog rock band, Talk Talk have always appealed to me; in fact, I posted their “It’s my life”, “Spirits of Eden” and “Laughing stock” albums in this blog. Among other things, the latter two albums are considered quite important by music reviewers, who have ‘coined’ a new term for the genre epitomized by both albums: ‘post-rock’.
I cannot understand the reason why I was so fond of Talk Talk – and I love listening to their records still today. Maybe because they marked an important time of my life, when I definitely said goodbye to my youth and turned into a ‘mature’ young man (even though I sometimes ask myself what ‘maturity’ stands for …)
Anyway, “The colour of spring” is a nice listen.
My personal mark: Fairly good.

LA 'PANADA' PIEMONTESE: UN PIATTO SEMPLICE ('PANADA': A PIEDMONTESE PLAIN DISH)

Non ho mai dedicato nessun post alla gastronomia: e penso che questo sarà proprio il primo e l’ultimo. Anche perché, detto fra noi, ho così poco tempo per vivere e ‘respirare’, figuriamoci se ne avrei per mettermi tutto concentrato davanti ai fornelli.
Ad ogni modo, voglio presentarvi una ricetta della cucina ‘povera’ (che, quindi, fa perfettamente al mio caso …) della mia regione: la ‘panada’ piemontese. L’ho mangiata ieri sera, dopo una vita che non lo facevo, e il suo sapore semplice mi ha davvero soddisfatto.
Anche se troverete ricette simili sulla Rete, la panada che vi propongo è quella “doc” di Torino, quella che preparava mia mamma quando ero piccolo. E non perché fossimo poveri: a quei tempi (anni Sessanta), ebbi la fortuna di crescere, figlio unico, in una famiglia di condizioni economiche discretamente agiate.
Ma quelli erano altri tempi, dannazione!
Veniamo alla ricetta:

OCCORRENTE:

- pane raffermo (circa 350-400 grammi)
- 2 dadi da cucina
- burro
- grissini
- grana padano (o parmigiano)

PREPARAZIONE (ricetta per 3 persone):

1) Riempire un casseruolino (diametro: circa 20 cm) con 1 litro d’acqua circa e, ad ebollizione, versarvi due dadi da cucina, preferibilmente dadi di carne.
2) Mantenendo fuoco medio, fare sciogliere completamente i dadi nell’acqua in ebollizione.
3) In una casseruola a parte larga e non tanto alta, di diametro maggiore (circa 30-35 cm), versare una noce di burro (di circa 2 x 2 x 4 cm), quindi tagliarla a pezzettini. Accendere il gas a fuoco basso, quindi fare sciogliere il burro, aggiungendo 2-3 cucchiai del brodo ottenuto nel casseruolino.
4) Versare il pane raffermo, a pezzi, nella casseruola più grande, quindi aggiungere poco per volta il brodo (non completamente – lasciatene un po’), utilizzando un mestolo, continuando a mescolare il pane in modo che non si attacchi al fondo della casseruola.
5) Grattugiare il grana o il parmigiano, in una quantità pari a circa 2 cucchiai, nella casseruola, quindi versarvi il brodo rimasto.
6) Continuare a mescolare, aggiungendo eventualmente grissini spezzettati, fino a ottenere una consistenza quasi pastosa, evitando di prosciugare tutto il brodo: il tutto deve assomigliare ad una ‘zuppa di pane’.


I have never dedicated any post to cooking in this blog of mine (and I think this post will be the first and last one in this series) – partly because I have to live and ‘drag on’ with my everyday life, busy with a lot of fucking things, and so I have very little time to devote to a hobby – least of all cooking.
In any case, I wish today to present a recipe of the so-called Italian ‘poor’ cuisine (the kind of cuisine I am most accustomed to …) peculiar to the region where I was born and have lived since: the ‘panada’ piemontese. I had it for supper last night, after I had not eaten it for ages, and I have to say I really enjoyed its ‘plain’ taste.
You will certainly find similar recipes in the Web; however, the dish I am about to present to you is the typical ‘panada’ enjoyed by former Turinese people – the dish my late mum used to cook when I was a child. Not because we were ‘poor’: by that time (the 1960s) I was lucky enough to grow up in a relatively wealthy family.
Those were the time!

Anyway, here is the recipe:

INGREDIENTS:

- stale bread (about 350-400 grams)
- 2 cooking cubes
- butter
- breadsticks
- Grana or Parmigiano cheese

DIRECTIONS (preparation for 3 persons):

1) Fill a saucepan (diameter: approximately 20 cm) with 1 litre water; when it boils over, add two cooking cubes (meat cubes, if possible).
2) Keep on cooking on a medium flame and allow the cubes to fully melt in the boiling water.
3) Put a knob of butter (measuring approximately 2 x 2 x 4 cm) in another, larger saucepan (with a diameter of approximately 30-35 cm), then cut the knob into small pieces. Turn the gas on a low flame, then allow butter to melt down, while adding 2-3 spoonfuls of the stock (i.e. broth) obtained in the saucepan.
4) Cut the stale bread into pieces and add them in the large saucepan, then add the stock a little at a time (do not pour all stock: leave some of it in the smaller saucepan). Keep on mixing the bread in order to prevent it from sticking to the saucepan bottom surface.
5) Grate some Grana or Parmigiano cheese, to an amount equal to 2 spoonfuls, into the larger saucepan, then pour the remaining stock into the latter.
6) Keep on mixing and add breadsticks cut into pieces, if you like, until you obtain nearly-pasty thickness. Do not allow the stock to dry up: the final dish should look like a ‘bread soup’.

STORIE DI UOMINI E NON (ROCKY'S FILJ) - 1973 - RE-POST

I Rocky’s Filj (dal nome del leader Rocky Rossi) sono stati un’ottima band di musicisti, originaria di Parma. Furono messi sotto contratto dalla Ricordi, dopo aver fatto da ottima spalla al Banco del Mutuo Soccorso in occasione di una tournee, e l’album fu prodotto da Sandro Colombini, il quale aveva collaborato con il Banco alla realizzazione dei loro primi album.
“Storie di uomini e non” è un album di stampo jazz-rock; tuttavia, tutti i pezzi sono cantati e la voce di Rocky è tutto sommato originale (pur essendo certamente non irresistibile). Le parti strumentali sono impeccabili: tutti i componenti della band sapevano suonare alla perfezione diversi strumenti, e l’album risulta assolutamente piacevole. Il lungo brano d’apertura “L’ultima spiaggia”, con le intense parti vocali e gli assoli di chitarra e sax, offre un tipico esempio della musica dei Rocky’s Filj, anche se il brano che preferisco è “Il soldato”.
Fra l’altro, ogni appassionato di rock progressivo noterà alcune ‘similitudini’ con il Banco del Mutuo Soccorso e i King Crimson del primo periodo.
Avrebbero meritato maggiore considerazione i Rocky’s Filj, indubbiamente. Eppure si sciolsero poco dopo la pubblicazione del loro unico album, anche perché uno dei componenti ebbe noie con la giustizia. Da ricordare la loro timida riapparizione nel 1979, con un 45 giri commerciale di scarso successo. Il leader Rocky Rossi morì purtroppo nel 1985 in un incidente stradale.
UN ALBUM DI PROG ITALIANO DA NON PERDERE!
Voto personale: Ottimo.

A band of very good musicians from Parma (Italy), Rocky's Filj (from their leader Rocky Rossi's name) gained a contract with Ricordi after a positive tour with Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, and the album was produced by Sandro Colombini, who had worked with Banco del Mutuo Soccorso themselves in their first albums.
“Storie di uomini e non” is a jazz-rock oriented album, yet all the tracks have vocals and Rocky's voice is very original (even if not great). Instrumental parts are very well made: all the band members could professionally play various instruments and the album is always very enjoyable. The long opening track “L’ultima spiaggia”, with dramatic vocals and long guitar and sax solo parts is a fine example of their music, even though “Il soldato” is my favourite piece.
Among other things, Rocky’s Filj’s music reminds me of early Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and King Crimson albums …
A band that deserved more consideration, Rocky's Filj broke up soon after the album was recorded, as one of them was jailed, reappearing in 1979 with a commercial single. Rocky Rossi sadly died in a car accident in 1985.
AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR ITALIAN PROG ROCK FANS!

ENVIRONMENTS 1 (THE FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON) - 2007

Lo scorso 12 dicembre ho postato “Lifeforms”, un doppio album dei The Future Sound of London, ovvero un duo formato da Garry Cobain e Brian Dougans.
Man mano che ho avuto modo di ascoltare l’album, ho approfondito la conoscenza di questa originale formazione britannica. In particolare, ho anche avuto modo di ascoltare gli album della loro serie “Environments”: un set di tre album pubblicati a partire dal 2007.
Ed è proprio con “Environments 1” che voglio proporre, oggi, l’ascolto di questa trilogia. Un album che si può descrivere come un viaggio affascinante nei mondi musicali dell’elettronica, della musica ambient e del pop sperimentale, tre generi musicali che, ultimamente, mi ‘assorbono’ come pochi altri.
Considero la serie “Environments” – e, in particolare, questo primo album - un traguardo ottimo, quasi eccellente, nel campo della sperimentazione e ricerca sonora ‘ambient’.
Per tale motivo, il mio voto personale non può essere altro che Ottimo/Eccellente.

Last December 12th I posted “Lifeforms”, a double album by The Future Sound of London (or F.S.O.L.), i.e. British duo Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans.
As I listened to the album more and more carefully, I felt the need to learn more about F.S.O.L. In particular, I had the chance to listen to their “Environments” series albums, i.e. three albums released from 2007 on.
That is why I am posting “Environments 1” today: an album that can be described as a fascinating journey into the realms of electronic, ambient and experimental music – three genres that have lately been appealing to me more than any other one.
I consider the “Environments” series – and, in particular, its release #1, i.e. today’s post – as a vergy good, almost excellent achiement in the fields of experimentation and ambient music
For the above reasons, I could not help giving this album a Very good/Excellent mark.

LUCA ABBA' E' FUORI PERICOLO

Luca Abba’, il leader anarchico NO TAV folgorato ieri durante l’arrampicata su traliccio dell’alta tensione in Val Susa, è fuori pericolo.

A seguito dell’incidente e della manifestazione spontanea di ieri mattina nella Valle, in tutta Italia si sono succedute decine di manifestazioni in segno di solidarietà con l’anarchico piemontese.
A Roma, blitz di manifestanti alla stazione Termini: danneggiato un Frecciarossa, corteo improvvisato su via Tiburtina e traffico in tilt. Ma le proteste si sono diffuse altrove: in piazza San Babila, a Milano, per protestare contro quello che hanno definito “un violento e infame attacco” contro Abba'. Tafferugli e manganellate a Bologna, dove i manifestanti hanno occupato tre binari della stazione ferroviaria. Occupazione della stazione anche ad Ancona, mentre a Genova e Venezia presidio davante alle Prefetture. Corteo anche a Napoli, a centinaia di chilometri di distanza dalla scena dell’incidente. A Torino, una donna è stata investita da un automobilista che avrebbe cercato di forzare uno dei blocchi stradali messi in atto in Val Susa.

Penso che non ci sia bisogno di ricordare, ancora una volta, LA TOTALE INUTILITA’ DI UN’OPERA COME LA LINEA AD ALTA VELOCITA’. Costi faraonici, per realizzare un’opera che servirà a ben poco. E poi, il pericolo insito nelle opere di scavo che verranno effettuate nella Valle di Susa (vedi presenza di uranio e amianto), il trasporto su rotaia che è andato sempre più calando, ecc. ecc. Per non parlare del fatto che la Val Susa, di per sé piuttosto stretta come vallata, è già attraversata dall’autostrada A32 Torino-Bardonecchia, dalla Statale 24, dalla Statale 25 e dalla ferrovia Torino-Modane. A proposito, la linea ferroviaria esistente è utilizzata, in relazione al trasporto merci, al 40% delle proprie capacità, tanto per restare in tema di efficienza di trasporti ...

E, come al solito, giornali e giornalisti si sono sbizzarriti sfoderando le loro migliori doti di leccaculismo ‘di parte’. Da un lato, chi difende a spada tratta i manifestanti; dall’altro, chi li criminalizza o, peggio, li ridicolizza, ad esempio “Il Giornale” o, peggio ancora, la palla di lardo Giuliano Ferrara che ieri sera su RAI1 ha ironizzato sulla distribuzione alimentare a ‘chilometri zero’, in riferimento agli abitanti della Val Susa che 'preferirebbero comprare le uova sotto casa' anziché vedere sfrecciare le vetture incubo della linea veloce, impegnate a trasportare mozzarelle che, secondo le parole di Grillo di qualche anno fa, se arrivano a destinazione tre ore dopo non è che ce ne freghi granché.

Piuttosto, perché non ammettono i loro veri intenti? Cioè, realizzare la linea TAV solo ed esclusivamente per gli interessi dei soliti pochi (es. politici, ditte appaltatrici in odore di mafia, ecc.)?

Essere contro la linea ad alta velocità non è questione di parteggiare per la destra, il centro o la sinistra. Si tratta solo di una questione di buon senso. Purtroppo, i media presentano la questione esattamente all’opposto, criminalizzando gli protesta legittimamente e ribadendo il pericolo di un nuovo terrorismo 'nuovo millennio'. Ed è comprensibile che fra coloro che protestano, quando nessuno li ‘caga’, la pazienza prima o poi venga meno.

La violenza genera violenza, non serve a molto, lo ammetto. Se non altro, in certi casi, può aiutare a ‘mantenere le distanze’ …

(The article above deals with an incident that occurred in Valle di Susa, Piedmont (Italy) yesterday morning, when Luca Abba’, a leader of the ‘NO TAV’ protest movement (i.e. the movement opposing the building of the TURIN-LYON high-speed railway line) fell to the ground from a height of 15 meters, after he had climbed up an electricity mains lattice as a sign of protest.
Doctors have said Luca Abba’ does no longer risk dying; however, the incident gave rise to a number of public demonstrations everywhere in Italy, most of them accompanied by riots.)

I THINK I HAVE THE RIGHT TO BOAST ABOUT IT: FIVE YEARS’ BLOGGING IS QUITE A ‘DEMANDING’ AND SATISFYING TASK. OF COURSE, I HAVE HAD ‘UPS AND DOWNS’, AS WITH ANY OTHER HUMAN ACTIVITY, ESPECIALLY IN 2010 AND 2011, TWO YEARS DURING WHICH I DID NOT POST SO MUCH. YET, I STARTED OVER EARNESTLY LAST AUTUMN.
I DO HOPE THIS BLOG WILL CONTINUE TO BE APPRECIATED BY VISITORS, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE LATELY CHANGED THE ‘FEEL’ OF IT (MAYBE, TOO MUCH AMBIENT MUSIC? MAYBE, AM I TOO ARGUMENTATIVE?)
