VERY 'EAVY ... VERY 'UMBLE (URIAH HEEP) - 1970

“Very ‘eavy ... very ‘umble” è stato l’album d’esordio degli Uriah Heep, band britannica fra le progenitrici dell’hard rock. L’album fu in genere trascurato dalla critica musicale specializzata dell’epoca, sebbene venga riconosciuto come uno dei primi classici del genere hard.
Gli Uriah Heep non sono un gruppo di rock progressivo nel vero senso del termine in quanto la loro musica affonda le radici in quello che a partire dalla fine degli anni Sessanta fu chiamato hard rock (o heavy metal). E infatti, ascoltando questo loro primo album si percepisce inconfondibilmente un suono piuttosto “duro”. Tuttavia, il lavoro creativo di questa band mostrava già una qual certa inclinazione verso il genere progressive, come risulta più evidente negli album successivi.
Il brano d’apertura “Gipsy” è con tutta probabilità il successo più famoso degli Uriah Heep. Altro pezzo forte di questo disco è “Come away Melinda”, una ballata acustica con introduzione tenue di flauto (probabilmente reso usando un mellotron), una chitarra acustica avvolgente e un cantato particolarmente intenso. Tuttavia, il pezzo che preferisco è quello conclusivo, “Wake up (Set your sights)”, indubbiamente il più ispirato al genere progressivo.
“Very ‘eavy … very ‘umble” è un disco interessante, leggermente sottovalutato, opera di una band anch’essa trascurata dalla critica rock. Si tratta di un album a suo modo coerente, con brani piacevoli. Un album piacevole, indubbiamente, consigliato a quelli che amano il rock progressivo e il primo hard-rock dei primi anni Settanta.

“Very ‘eavy ... very ‘umble” is the debut album of British hard rock band Uriah Heep. The album was generally panned by the mainstream critical press upon its release, although it has since been acknowledged as an early classic of the hard rock genre.
Uriah Heep aren't a pure progressive rock band, cause their roots are on hard rock/heavy metal from late 1960's. In fact, this first album of theirs clearly says that the sound is heavy. But the creative work of the band already showed some inclination to progressive rock (which would be much more clear in the next albums).
The opener “Gipsy” is perhaps Uriah Heep’s most famous hit. Another gem of the album is no doubt “Come away Melinda”, an acoustic ballad with a flute (probably mellotron) introduction, a very soft and beautiful acoustic guitar and a very inspired singing. But the song I like best in this album is the closing track “Wake up (Set your sights)”, the most prog rock-oriented piece of “Very ‘eavy … very ‘umble”.
This is a very interesting and underrated debut from an underrated band in rock. The album is very consistent and the songs are good. A very good album, without a doubt, recommended to those who like progressive rock and also hard-rock from early 1970s.
