BELLA 'MBRIANA (PINO DANIELE) - 1982

Dopo aver postato “Bonne Soirèe” il 11 dicembre (e, ancor prima, “Ferryboat”, il 23 aprile), rieccomi con un altro album di Pino Daniele: “Bella ‘mbriana”, a mio parere il migliore dell’artista partenopeo.
Più di tutti gli altri, un album orientato al rock-jazz di stampo internazionale (non a caso, è stato realizzato con la partecipazione di famosi musicisti stranieri) seppur con gli immancabili riferimenti alla musica latina e al sound partenopeo moderno. Pino Daniele regala in questo disco alcune perle del suo repertorio: fra i pezzi che prediligo cito “Mo basta”, “Toledo”, Annarè”, “Tutta ‘nata storia” e, soprattutto, il brano di chiusura “Maggio se ne va”, struggente melodia napoletana ricamata su un impeccabile tappeto sonoro.

Voto personale (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

After posting “Bonne soirèe” on December 11th 2007 (which followed “Ferryboat”, posted on April 23rd 2007), here I am posting another record by Pino Daniele: “Bella ‘mbriana”, which I consider the best release of the famous Italian rock artist born in Neaples.
An album oriented to international rock-jazz, to a much larger extent than any other album by Daniele. Several reonwned foreign musicians contributed to making the album’s original blend of rock, jazz, modern Neapolitan sound and latin music. “Bonne soirèe” includes some of the best songs ever composed by Daniele: in particular I’m very keen on such pieces as “Mo basta”, “Toledo”, Annarè”, “Tutta ‘nata storia” and, above all, the closing track “Maggio se ne va” (a poignant tune, full Neapolitan style, constructed on a faultless sound background.

My personal mark (poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

I PADRI DEL ROCK ("FATHERS" OF ROCK)

Ieri, durante una discussione con mio figlio - troppo giovane per capire chi sono stati i veri padri fondatori del rock - gli ho elencato un elenco di quelle che ritengo le figure principali della musica moderna.
In alto ho postato alcune splendide foto di questi maestri del rock. A mio parere, tutto il rock-pop che si ascolta oggi è partito da loro. O forse mi sbaglio???

Who do you think the “fathers or rock music” are? Yesterday I was talking about this subject with my son - no doubt he’s too young to really appreciate and be aware of the “masters of rock”. And I made a list of those who I consider to be these masters.

SYNCHRONICITY (POLICE) - 1983

Pubblicato nel 1983, “Synchronicity” è il quinto album dei Police: indubbiamente il maggior successo commerciale del gruppo, come confermò la successiva tournee all’insegna del tutto esaurito nelle arene più disparate del mondo (fra le quali lo Shea Stadium di New York). Purtroppo, si sarebbe trattato dell’ultimo album (e dell’ultima tournee) della band.
Come nel caso degli altri dischi dei Police, “Synchronicity” contiene alcuni “tappabuchi” scontati (ad esempio, l’inverosimile storia di dinosauri narrata in "Walking in your footsteps" e la quasi inascoltabile "Mother"); per il resto, si tratta di un album eccezionale. "Every breath you take" fu uno dei maggiori successi a 45 giri del 1983: un brano fin troppo inflazionato, forse. Ben più interessanti sono gli altri brani di punta dell’album: il rock “deciso” di "Synchronicity II", la più calma "Wrapped around your finger" e "King of pain." Completano la track list altri brani di ottima fattura quali "O my God," "Synchronicity I" (usata spesso come pezzo d’apertura dei concerti), "Tea in the Sahara" e "Miss Gradenko, originale composizione di Copeland.
“Synchronicity” è uno dei pochisismi album del 1983 in grado di fondere alla perfezione pop leggero, rock sofisticato e equilibrio compositivo sia nei testi che nelle musiche. Un classico del rock universale, un disco da ascoltare fuori di ogni dubbio.
Voto personale (insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

Although the Police's fifth release, 1983's “Synchronicity”, would be their most commercially successful and lead to a sold-out tour of enormodomes (including New York's Shea Stadium), it would turn out to be the trio's final album and tour.
Like all Police recordings, “Synchronicity” contains some obvious "fillers" (such as the silly dinosaur tale of "Walking in your footsteps" and the almost unlistenable "Mother"), but for the most part, it's exceptional. One of 1983's biggest singles, the haunting "Every breath you take" is an obvious highlight, as well as other hits - the cacophonous rocker "Synchronicity II" plus the far more temperate "Wrapped around your finger" and "King of Pain” Also included are the often-overlooked tracks "O my God," "Synchronicity I" (used as a concert opener on the ensuing tour), "Tea in the Sahara" and the Stewart Copeland’s original "Miss Gradenko”.
Few other albums from 1983 merged tasteful pop, sophistication, and expert songwriting as well as “Synchronicity” did, resulting in yet another all-time classic.

VACANZE INVERNALI (WINTER VACATION)

Approfittando di alcuni giorni di riposo, me ne sono andato in montagna.
C’è che va a Cortina d’Ampezzo, chi a Courmayeur, chi a Cervinia, chi a Livigno. E c’è anche chi va ai Caraibi, sul Mar Rosso o alle Seychelles.

Noi no, noi, no. Noi abbiamo trascorso qualche giorno in un posto sperduto della Val di Susa. E durante una passeggiata abbiamo raggiunto queste quattro case messe in croce, vero paradiso di pace e solitudine.

I had a few days’ rest, so I took this chance to go to the mountains.
Some people go to Cortina d’Ampezzo, some go to Courmayeur or Cervinia or Livigno. Some people prefer to travel to the Caribbean islands, the Red Sea resorts or the Seychelles islands.

We don’t like it, no, we don’t. We spent a few days in a forlorn place in Val di Susa, Province of Turin (Italy). Two days ago we had a stroll and went to the deserted hamlet shown in the pictures above - a real haven of peace and solitude.

TORINO SOTTO LA NEVE (A SNOWFALL IN TURIN)

La scorsa notte è iniziato a nevicare a Torino. Non è certo stata una nevicata abbondante: se non altro, ci ricorda che siamo in inverno.Ecco una foto della via dove abito: a metà pomeriggio, era poca la neve rimasta sul controviale e le strade erano ormai sgombre.

Snow began to fall on Turin last night. Well, it wasn’t a heavy snowfall at all; just a flurry to remind us that winter has come over.

The photo above shows the street where I live: very little snow was covering the traffic island grass by mid afternoon, and the streets had already been cleared.

Il fotografo Peter Menzel ha deciso di viaggiare per il mondo e fotografare 30 famiglie di 24 paesi di tutto il pianeta. L’idea era di fotografare la famiglia riunita intorno alla tavola e i loro consumi di cibo in una settimana.
Il libro si chiama “Hungry planet” e sorprende molto la differenza fra un paese e un altro.
Vediamo in alcune foto il numero di persone che compongono il nucleo familiare e i prodotti che consumano ...

Photographer Peter Menzel travelled all over the world and took photographs of 30 families from 24 different countries. He meant to portray the families gathering at their dining tables and their respective food consumption over a week.
These photos have been included in a book entitled “Hungry planet” - a very striking book when it comes to the differences between the various countries.
Just have a look at the persons making up a typical family in a given country and the money value of the food resources they can afford ...

2008 – BENTORNATI AL MIO BLOG (2008 – WELCOME BACK TO MY BLOG)

Dopo qualche giorno di riposo, rieccomi qui come promesso.
I propositi del nuovo anno per questo blog? Bene, spero di proporre cose sempre interessanti e, nei limiti del possibile, di ampliare gli argomenti trattati. A questo riguardo, dedicherò più spazio a questioni di attualità e politica, anche se parlare di “politica” comporta sempre qualche rischio. Diciamo piuttosto, commenti basati sul buon senso.
Quanto all’immagine di cui sopra, abbiate pazienza: Massimo, un mio caro amico, mi definisce “monotematico”, vista la mia propensione a parlare molto spesso di un certo argomento. Non è colpa mia, mia madre mi ha fatto così …
Scherzi a parte, andiamo a iniziare il 2008. Non con la musica, bensì con alcuni post di immagini.

After a few days’ rest, here I am again like I promised to.
My new year’s resolutions? Well, I hope I’ll be posting more interesting stuff: if I’ve got enough spare time, I’ll do my best to extend the range of the subjects I’ll be dealing with. To this regard, I’ll be introducing articles about current events and politics, even though talking about “politics” often involves some risks. I’d rather say I’ll be making comments and remarks based on “common sense”.
As far as the above picture is concerned, please do excuse me: a dear friend of mine called Massimo says I’m “single-themed”, owing to my having a bent for talking about the gentle sexy most of the time. Well, I’m not to blame for it: that was the way I was born …
Seriously, let me start my 2008 blogging with a few picture posts.
