ITALIAN PROGPILATION 1 (ARTISTI VARI)

Dopo due settimane di vacanza, rieccomi con un post alquanto insolito: “Italian progpilation 1”.

Si tratta di una serie di dieci brani in qualche modo progressive, alcuni realizzati da famose band italiane, altre da musicisti (sempre italiani) di minor fama. In ogni caso, una compilation tutta mia personale.

After being away on holiday for two weeks, here I am again posting a quite funny, unusual album: “Italian progpilation 1”.

A set of ten songs (which can be termed somewhat “progressive”), this original compilation of my own includes some tracks recorded by famous Italian prog bands, and some others released by less famous Italian artists.

THE GREAT DECEIVER (LIVE) (DISC 2) - KING CRIMSON (1973-74)

Questo album dal vivo dei King Crimson contiene registrazioni effettuate nel 1973-74. I brani sono tratti in prevalenza da "Larks' tongues in aspic" e "Starless and bible black", e la formazione è quella a cinque tipica dei King Crimson "secondo periodo".

Trattandosi del CD2, mi riprometto di postare non appena possibile il CD 1.

Veramente buona la qualità sonora della registrazione.

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

This live record by King Crimson includes a set of recordings dating back to 1973-74 - most of them based on the pieces contained in "Larks' tongues in aspic" and "Starless and bible black", the most recent albums released by the band by that time.

As I'm posting "The great deceiver - Disc 2" today, I promise I'll post "Disc 1" as soon as possible.

The live recording sound quality is fairly good.

My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.

CONTAMINAZIONE (ROVESCIO DELLA MEDAGLIA) - 1973

La band “Il Rovescio della Medaglia” nacque a Roma verso la fine del 1970, quando tre musicisti dei “Lombrichi” assunsero nell’organico il cantante Pino Ballarini. Dopo aver partecipato con successo al Festival Pop di Viareggio, la band (nota anche com RDM) divenne una delle più famose nei circuiti live nell’Italia dei primi anni Settanta.

Dopo aver pubblicato due lavori, caratterizzati da influssi hard-rock e progressive, il Rovescio della Medaglia produsse il loro terzo album “capolavoro”: “Contaminazione”, con il supporto di Luis Enriquez Bacalov, il compositore argentino che aveva in precedenza collaborato con i New Trolls e gli Osanna.

“Contaminazione” contiene musiche tratte dal “Clavicembalo ben temperato” di Johann Sebastian Bach, le quali si fondono impercettibilmente con la musica propria della band. Il disco fu anche pubblicato in una versione in inglese, “Contamination”.

Un vero capolavoro per tutti gli amanti del genere progressivo – un album da ascoltare con attenzione, più volte, per poter essere apprezzato a dovere.

Il Rovescio della Medaglia (a.k.a. RDM) was formed in Rome around the end of 1970 when three musicians from the 60's band “I Lombrichi” recruited vocalist Pino Ballarini. Their first great success was at Viareggio Pop festival and they soon became one of the most popular live bands in Italy during the early 70's.

After releasing two albums (characterized by hard-rock plus prog influences), a new member (keyboard player Franco Di Sabbatino) was added to the band in 1973. With their sound enriched by the keyboards, RDM released the third (and most appreciated) album: “Contaminazione”, supported by Argentine composer Luis Enriquez Bacalov, who had already worked with Italian prog bands New Trolls and Osanna.

“Contaminazione” contains pieces from J. S. Bach’s “Well-tempered Clavier” seamlessly integrated with RDM’s own music. The album was also released in an English version, “Contamination”.

A true masterpiece for all prog rock lovers - an album that needs be listened to carefully a lot of times in order to be appreciated.

5 LUGLIO: IL MIO COMPLEANNO (JULY 5TH: MY BIRTHDAY)

In questi giorni di duro lavoro, non ho neanche avuto tempo di festeggiare il mio 47° compleanno.

Oggi voglio condividere con i miei lettori questo ennesimo traguardo (ma sarà poi tale? - Meglio 50 anni da leoni che 100 da co*****i. O forse è meglio il contrario???).

Per l'occasione, posto una simpatica immagine di quando avevo 11 mesi, insieme ad un'altra di qualche anno fa (ovviamente, impegnato all'organo a canne, tanto per rimanere nell'argomento del blog).

Having worked to exhaustion during the past few days, I didn't even the time to celebrate my birthday: in fact I was 47 the day before yesterday.

Today I wish to share this "life timeline" of mine with all the visitors to my blog (as an Italian proverb goes, "Living a lion's life for 50 years is better than living a sheep's life for 100 years ... Someone may think of it differently?)

For the occasion, I'm posting one picture of me myself when I was 11 months old, together with a more recent photo of me playing a church organ (just to stick to the subject of this blog).

COSA SUCCEDERÀ ALLA RAGAZZA (L. BATTISTI) - 1992

Dopo una settimana di assenza, rieccomi con un nuovo post musicale, questa volta dedicato al Battisti “secondo periodo”. Dopo aver proposto “La sposa occidentale” (12 maggio) e “Don Giovanni” (4 giugno), ecco “Cosa succederà alla ragazza”, album pubblicato da Lucio Battisti nel 1992, in collaborazione con il poeta-paroliere Pasquale Panella. La tendenza dei due lavori precedenti si consolida ulteriormente in questo album: testi criptici, ermetici, densi di giochi di parole e di doppi sensi; sonorità sempre più elettroniche col dominio assoluto di una sezione ritmica orientata verso la musica techno; canto impersonale, con la quasi totale scomparsa degli acuti, dell'alternarsi di toni alti e bassi che costituivano il punto di forza del particolare uso della voce di Battisti.

Leggermente inferiore rispetto ai due lavori precedenti, “Cosa succederà alla ragazza” contiene in ogni caso brani di sicuro interesse quali l’omonimo pezzo di apertura, “Tutte le pompe” e “Però il rinoceronte”.

After being kept busy for a week, here I am again posting another work from Lucio Battisti’s “second period”. After posting “La sposa occidentale” (May 12th) and “Don Giovanni” (June 4th), here’s today’s post: “Cosa succederà alla ragazza”, released by the great Italian singer and composer in 1992, once again in collaboration with poet-lyricist Pasquale Panella. As with the previous works – and even to a much larger extent – “Cosa succederà alla ragazza” is characterized by cryptic lyrics (a sort of intellectual mind game), electronic sound and tunes, techno-pop rhythm patterns, and an impersonal singing style.

Standing a little lower compared with the two preceding albums, “Cosa succederà alla ragazza” includes in any case some remarkable songs such as, in my opinion, the opening track with the same name as the album, “Tutte le pompe” and “Però il rinoceronte”.

SCUSE DOVUTE (MY DUE APOLOGIES)

Quando ho iniziato a curare questo blog, ho fatto una "dichiarazione di intenti", nella quale affermavo che, in alcuni periodi, avrei potuto essere ultraimpegnato con il lavoro, al punto da trascurare completamente il blog.
Ciò è quanto mi è successo nell'ultima settimana: non ho postato un fico secco dallo scorso venerdì 29 giugno. Mi scuso pertanto con i miei lettori, e in questo fine settimana provvederò a rifarmi, prima di partire per le vacanze.

When I started this blog, I made a "declaration of intents" in which I said that I might happen to be kept very busy with my job and, as a consequence, I would not have time to take care of my blog.
This is what happened during the past week: I haven't posted a f*****g thing since last Friday (June 29th). I do apology to my readers: I'll try to make up for that during this week-end, before leaving on holiday.
