TAZENDA (TAZENDA) - 1988

Nel 1988, Gigi Camedda e Gino Marielli fondarono, insieme ad Andrea Parodi (la potente voce solista del gruppo fino al 1997 – fra l’altro, scomparso prematuramente all’età di 51 anni nell'ottobre 2006) una delle prime band di rock etnico italiano: i Tazenda.

Oggi voglio postare il loro primo album, il quale mise alla luce un suono innovativo che non passò inosservato né ai critici né al pubblico: le “launeddas”, il canto “a tenores”, l’impiego dell’organetto diatonico e di chitarre elettriche dai suoni simili a quelli delle cornamuse e, soprattutto, i preziosi intrecci vocali hanno reso i Tazenda (definiti “La bandiera della Sardegna”) facilmente riconoscibili, al punto che sia i fan sia la critica hanno in seguito coniato il termine “Tazenda sound”, a riconoscimento della loro produzione originale di alta qualità.

Dopo il primo album (venduto in circa 60.000 copie) ne seguirono molti altri: “Murales”, “Limba”, “Fortza Paris”, ecc. Il gruppo ha inoltre collaborato con numerosi artisti (in prevalenza italiani) del calibro di Fabrizio de Andrè, Pierangelo Bertoli, Mauro Pagani, Paola Turci, Inti Illimani e Simple Minds, solo per citarne alcuni. Numerose le tournee in tutto il mondo, grazie alle quali i Tazenda hanno potuto diffondere la loro musica, riscuotendo successo, in particolare, in paesi quali Stati Uniti, Canada, Australia, Germania, Inghilterra, Svizzera, Belgio e Cuba. Per tale motivo, la band viene considerata “La bandiera della Sardegna nel mondo” e, non a caso, le loro canzoni sono scritte e cantate in dialetto sardo.

I miei brani preferiti di questo disco d’esordio dei Tazenda comprendono “Sos ojos de sa jana”, “… A passu lentu”, “Chelu nieddu” e, soprattutto, “No potho reposare”.

In 1988, Gigi Camedda and Gino Marielli founded, together with Andrea Parodi (the early talented lead vocalist who left the band in 1997 and, among other things, passed away untimely, at the age of 51, in October 2006), one of the first ethnic-rock groups in Italy: Tazenda.

The first album (which I’m posting today) revealed a fresh sound that did not pass unnoticed to the critics and the people: the “launeddas”, the “tenores”, the use of the diatonic hand organ and of electric guitars sounding like bagpipes, and, above all, the vocal textures make the band (also labelled “The flag of Sardinia”) easily recognizable to such an extent that both people and critics would later on introduce the “Tazenda sound” mark: in a word, a unique seal of quality.

From this very album, which sold about 60.000 copies, several others followed up: “Murales”, “Limba”, “Fortza Paris”, etc. Tazenda also collaborated with many artists (previously Italian ones) such as, Fabrizio de Andrè, Pierangelo Bertoli, Mauro Pagani, Paola Turci, Inti Illimani, Simple Minds, and many others. The band toured worldwide several times: the US, Canada, Australia, Germany, England, Switwerland, Belgium and Cuba are some of the countries that gave them a warm welcome. For this reason they’ve been considered the “Sardinian flag in the world”, and, among other things, their songs are written and sung in the Sardinian dialect, which is very different from Italian and stands as a "language" of its own.

My favourite tracks of Tazenda’s debut album include “Sos ojos de sa jana”, “… A passu lentu”, “Chelu nieddu” and, above all, “No potho reposare”.

YS (BALLETTO DI BRONZO) - 1972

Il Balletto di Bronzo è un gruppo progressive italiano originario di Napoli, nato a metà anni Sessanta e con due soli album all’attivo (“Sirio 2222” e “Ys”) prima dello scioglimento, avvenuto nel 1973.

L’album che posto oggi, “Ys”, è un concept diviso in cinque parti e composto interamente dal dotato tastierista Gianni Leone. Dal punto di vista stilistico, il disco alterna fusion (piuttosto datata, occorre sottolinearlo), rock psichedelico e progressivo, e una sorta di free-jazz d’avanguardia (il tutto strizzando l'occhio a E. L. & P. e ai King Crimson). Su tutto predominano le tastiere e la voce di Gianni Leone: riguardo a quest’ultima, tuttavia, nutro personalmente più di una perplessità, soprattutto a causa di quel modo datato di rendere, per l’appunto, le parti vocali.

Un album “pesante”, zeppo di dissonanze e di effetti, che comunque va ascoltato (più volte) e che a suo modo conserva un certo fascino.

Il Balletto di Bronzo (Italian for “The Ballet of Bronze”) was an Italian progressive rock band from Naples. They formed in the mid 1960s and released two albums: “Sirio 2222” and “Ys”, before disbanding in 1973.

Written by keyboardist/vocalist Gianni Leone, “Ys” is a concept album divided into five parts. Stylistically the album moves through odd-metered fusion, progressive and psychedelic rock and avant-garde/free jazz leanings (with E. L. & P. and King Crimson "just round the corner"). Gianni Leone's keyboards and vocals dominate: with regard to the latter, I myself have some personal objections to make, especially in connection to Gianni Leone’s outdated (according to present days’ standards) rendering of vocals.

Its density and heavy use of dissonance have earned it a reputation as a difficult, if potentially rewarding, listen.

PORT OF MYSTERY (YANNI) - 1997

Yanni (all’anagrafe Yiannis Chrysomallis) è un tastierista autodidatta nato nel 1954 a Kalamata (Grecia). Da giovane acquisì fama sportiva nel nuoto, stabilendo un record nazionale nei 50 metri stile libero. Successivamente si traferì in America dove frequentò l’Università del Minensota, laureandosi in psicologia. Dopo la laurea, Yanni decise di dedicarsi alla musica, pur non avendo la ben che minima conoscenza in materia. Imparò da solo e, con il tempo, iniziò a scrivere composizioni proprie.

Il grande successo arrivò con la pubblicazione dell’album (corredato di video) “Yanni Live at the Acropolis”, registrato il 25 settembre 1993 all’Acropoli di Atene e pubblicato l’anno successivo. L’album e il video hanno venduto insieme più di 7 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo.

“Port of mystery” è una compilation che comprende brani dei primi album. La musica di Yanni viene sovente descritta come “new age”, sebbene l’artista ellenico preferisca la denominazione “musica strumentale contemporanea”. Si tratta di un album basato sulle tastiere elettroniche, tuttavia non dovete certo aspettarvi un disco pomposo come quelli dei mostri sacri progressive delle tastiere (es. Keith Emerson o Rick Wakeman).

“Port of mystery” è un album decisamente più “tranquillo” – in ogni caso, piacevole all’ascolto. Fra i brani che preferisco, “Looking glass”, “Port of mystery” e “Butterfly dance”.

Yanni (born Yiannis Chrysomallis) is a a self-taught keyboard player born in Kalamata, Greece in 1954. Early in his life, he was also a competitive swimmer in Greece and set a national record in the 50-meter freestyle competition. He later attended the University of Minnesota and earned a B.A. in psychology. After graduation, Yanni chose to try a career in music, although he could not read music and had no formal training. Using his own form of musical shorthand, he began writing original works.

Yanni's breakthrough commercial success came with the release of his album and video “Yanni, Live at the Acropolis”, which was filmed on September 25, 1993 at the 2,000-year-old Acropolis, Athens, and released in 1994. The album and the video have sold altogether more than 7 million copies worldwide.

“Port of Mystery” is a compilation including tracks from the early albums. Yanni’s music is frequently described as “new age”, though he prefers the term "contemporary instrumental”. Based on electronic keyboards, “Port of mystery” in an interesting work by a solo keyboardist. Yet, do not expect pompous music such as prog icons Keith Emerson’s or Rick Wakeman’s.

A quite enjoyable album, in any case. My favourite tracks include “Looking glass”, “Port of mystery” and “Butterfly dance".

ASIA (ASIA) - 1982

L’album d’esordio del supergruppo Asia (John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes) porta lo stesso nome della band, ed è considerato da molti (fra i quali il sottoscritto) il loro lavoro migliore. Nel 1981, John Wetton e Steve Howe (reduce dalla recente dipartita dagli Yes) iniziarono a lavorare al progetto “Asia”. A loro si unirono ben presto Carl Palmer (degli E. L. & P.) e Geoff Downes (ex membro dei Buggles e degli stessi Yes cui apparteneva Steve Howe).

L’album omonimo d’esordio (che posto oggi) uscì nel 1982 e, sulla scia dei successoni a 45 giri “Heat of the moment” e “Only time will tell”, ebbe un enorme successo commerciale, raggiungendo i primi posti nelle classifiche di molti paesi (Stati Uniti inclusi). I brani di questo album dimostrano la loro freschezza a distanza di ormai 25 anni, e vengono tuttora proposti da molte emittenti che trasmettono musica rock. Tuttavia, i critici e molti fan di rock progressivo rimasero delusi da questo album, la cui musica assomigliava troppo, a quanto pare, al pop più commerciale.

Che questo sia vero o meno, “Asia” è comunque da ascoltare, e molti dei suoi brani (es. “Only time will tell”, “Sole survivor”, “Cutting it fine”, “Without you”) rappresentano esempi di buon rock.

The first album released by arena progressive rock group Asia (John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes) bears the same band name and is considered to be their best one. Founding members John Wetton and Steve Howe (having come out of the break-up of Yes in early 1981) started working and writing in 1981 and were subsequently joined by Carl Palmer (from E. L. & P.) and Geoff Downes (who had previously worked with Buggles and Yes themselves.

Asia’s eponymous album (which I’m posting today) was released in 1982 and, boosted by famous singles “Heat of the moment” and “Only time will tell”, enjoyed massive commercial success, becoming a Number 1 hit in many countries (including the U.S.A.). The tracks from the Asia debut have stood the test of time and are played on classic rock stations throughout the world today. Yet, Asia’s first album was considered disappointing by music critics and many fans of traditional progressive rock, who found the music closer to radio-friendly pop.

In any case, “Asia” is worth a listen, as many of its tracks (e.g. “Only time will tell”, “Sole survivor”, “Cutting it fine”, “Without you”) are no doubt very good examples of rock music.
