TRESPASS (GENESIS) - 1970

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

Genesis debuted in 1969 with "From Genesis to Revelation," and although it's a good album overall, it's tarnished somewhat by producer Jonathan King, who smothered most of the band's songs with horns & string arrangements, making them sound more like an orchestral outfit than a rock band. But with new producer John Anthony onboard, Genesis totally shifted into high gear with their second album, 1970's "Trespass," and delivered their first real masterpiece - they truly became a band with this one.
"Trespass" has been somewhat overlooked by record buyers over the years, as it doesn't feature Phil Collins on drums or Steve Hackett on lead guitar, but fear not: guitarist Anthony Phillips, in his second & final album with the band, is an amazing player himself (and for further proof of this, check out his wonderful catalog of solo albums), and John Mayhew, in his only album with the group, is no Phil Collins, but his drumming here is certainly good (if it wasn't, I don't think the band would've hired him in the first place), and he gets the job done.
The classic Genesis line-up with Collins & Hackett were still one album away, but the "Trespass" line-up of the band still deliver the goods in tremendous fashion. "Looking for someone" is the incredible opener, starting with Peter Gabriel's unique voice breaking through the silence, with the rest of the band later joining in to create a rock piece filled with wonderful drama & atmosphere. "White mountain" is appropriately titled, starting with Tony Banks' lone mellotron giving one the feeling of being in the snow-covered mountains somewhere. Then the beautiful acoustic guitars of Phillips & Mike Rutherford kick in, Gabriel starts to sing, and the band take us off on another great musical adventure. "Visions of angels" has a more ballady feel to it, but it's still a very strong, majestic tune. "Stagnation" is a Genesis classic, a shimmering beauty played with great virtuosity, featuring a very exuberant instrumental bridge, and passionate vocals by Gabriel. "Dusk," the quietest tune on the album, is a very lovely number, featuring a first-rate flute solo from Gabriel in the bridge. And finally, Genesis throw down the gauntlet with the ferocious "The knife," a monster 9-minute piece about the heat of battle, with the band working like a five-headed behemoth to bring this powerful track to life. It's a fabulous, memorable rocker, the first Genesis signature tune. The classic album cover, featuring a renaissance painting with a big knife slashing across the painting, is a perfect reflection of both the album's beauty and power. "Trespass" was Genesis' first true musical statement, and a firm sign of things to come from this incredible band.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

DON GIOVANNI (LUCIO BATTISTI) - 1986

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

Released in 1986, “Don Giovanni” is an album by Italian pop-singer Lucio Battisti, produced in collaboration with poet-lyricist Pasquale Panella (famous for his mysterious, cryptic lyrics rich in puns). It is the first - or second, depending on one’s viewpoint - album of Battisti’s “new course”, characterized by techno-pop sounds and patterns, such as the ones found in “La sposa occidentale, released in 1990 (which I posted on May 12th).
Among other things, I had also posted, on May 3rd, “Il nostro caro angelo”, which is one of the best albums released by Battisti in his earlier song-writing stage (i.e. the one Battisti’s fans are particularly keen on).
“Don Giovanni” is sort of half-way between the earlier and later style adopted by this famous Italian pop artist (born in Poggio Bustone, not far from Rome, in 1943, and passed away untimely in September 1998). In spite of its featuring electronic atmospheres, the songs sound somewhat like Battisti’s 1970s hits, and the very orchestra instruments yield a more “Italian” and less “synthetic” feel. In my opinion, “Don Giovanni”, “Le cose che pensano” and “Fatti un pianto” are among the best songs ever composed by Lucio Battisti.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

TRACK LIST:

1. Le cose che pensano
2. Fatti un pianto
3. Il doppio del gioco
4. Madre pennuta
5. Equivoci amici
6. Don Giovanni
7. Che vita ha fatto

Due to my posting pictures of sexy women on the other blog of mine, I haven't lately paid much attention to the fair sex squared to the power of ... X.
So, it was about time I posted again some pictures of Italian sexy gals: let me introduce you to the pretty, smart and ever-smiling Luisa Corna.

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (a.k.a. Banco) is an Italian rock band having its origins in the spread of progressive rock from Britain to the continent in the 1970s. They first recorded in 1972 and they are still active as of 2006, with a recorded 25 albums.
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso’ album “Darwin!” (which I posted on March 9th) is famed in experimental-progressive rock circles for being voted one of the best records ever on the web site "Gnosis", from 60,000 candidate records.
Among progressive rock fans, their entire 1970s production is held in high regard, particularly "Banco del Mutuo Soccorso" (1972), "Darwin!" (1972), "Io sono nato libero" (1973), and "Di terra" (1978).
“Di terra” is just the album I’m posting today: a fully instrumental record providing an excellent blend of classical music, rock and jazz. This elaborate album was recorded with the aid of the “Unione Musicisti di Roma” symphonic orchestra. Compared with other 1970s prog bands (e.g. E. L. & P., Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, etc.) who recorded with the aid of an orchestra, “Di terra” ranks at a much higher level. Here, the orchestra is not “slaved” to the rock band: it simply plays the leading role, yet “Di terra” cannot be labelled as “classical music”. To sum up, you must absolutely listen to this record.
Sit down on your favourite armchair, put your earphones on, relax and have a glass of beer or wine within easy reach. Then start playing “Di terra”. Pure delight, no doubt about it!
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

LIZARD - KING CRIMSON (1970)

In the wake of Poseidon”.
Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

“Lizard” is an album by King Crimson, released in 1970. It was the second recorded by a transitional line-up of the group that never had the opportunity to perform live. This would be the first (and only) album to feature bassist/vocalist Gordon Haskell and drummer Andy McCulloch as official members of the band.
Lizard is arguably King Crimson's most jazz-inflected album, developing further in the direction suggested by the track "Cat food" on “In the Wake of Poseidon” (also released as a single). King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield's contributions to Lizard include some of his most imaginitive and evocative work.
Though not highly reputed among fans, “Lizard” stand out as one of Robert Fripp’s best albums ever. The album consists of five tracks - the whole of the original LP’s side “B” being taken up by “Lizard” (the best track of the record, in my opinion): this is the longest composed (as distinct from improvised) piece ever recorded by King Crimson. This piece is divided into several sections and even subsections, with a narrative (running through its entirety) about a prince who takes part in an epic battle.
The other track I like better is "Cirkus" (perhaps the best-known track on the album), which begins with a hushed verse from Haskell before launching into a menacing theme played by Fripp on the mellotron.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

17 RE (LITFIBA)

Come in molti album postati in precedenza, è difficile segnalare i brani migliori.
Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

Released in 1987, "17 re" is considered to be the best album by Litfiba, one of the most outstanding Italian bands in the 1980s and 1990s (at least until 1993, when they released "Terremoto").
"17 re" was originally published as a double LP including sixteen songs that combine Italian pop, new wave, post-punk and hard rock.
As with many of the albums I have posted so far, it is very difficult to say what the best tracks are. In any case, I feel that "Febbre", "Pierrot e la luna", "Apapaia", "Univers" and "Sulla terra" stand out compared with the other songs.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.
