AGOSTO: IL TEMPO DELLA PIGRIZIA (AUGUST: WHAT A LAZY TIME)

Living in Italian inland cities in the middle week of August may be depressing: the streets are empty, most people are away on holiday, we spend idle days and we feel like doing anything at all.
Some more days at a friend's place will do me good.

MADE IN JAPAN (DEEP PURPLE) - 1972

Basti ascoltare brani memorabili come "Smoke on the water", "Child in time" e "Strange kind of woman".
ECCELLENTE! Non c'è il minimo dubblio!

Deep Purple's "Made in Japan" needs no superfluous word or comment. A record that stands as a monument of hard rock, performed and recorded by a group who laid the groundwork for the heavy metal bands of the following decades. Just listen to such memorable tracks as "Smoke on the water, "Child in time" and "Strange kind of woman".
What else could I say?
Which mark should I put to this album (originally a double LP)?
EXCELLENT! No doubt about it!

10 CC (10 CC)

Il 19 e 24 aprile ho postato, rispettivamente, gli album “The original soundtrack” e “How dare you!” dei 10 CC.
Fra i brani migliori (a mio giudizio), il brano di apertura “Rubber bullets”, “Donna” e “Fresh air for my mama”.
Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

On April 19th and 24th I posted 10 CC’s albums “The original soundtrack” and “How dare you!”. 10 CC are a British rock music group who achieved their greatest commercial success during the 1970s. In particular, I rank “The original soundtrack” among the best rock albums ever - a perfect album in any sense, as I commented on my post dated April 19th.
Today I’m posting “10 CC”, the debut album which bears the same name of this outstanding band, each member of which plays various instruments and is a talented vocalist as well. This is “sound” rock, sometimes inspired by the 1950s American rock, rich in falsetto singing. My favourite tracks include the opener “Rubber bullets”, “Donna” and “Fresh air for my mama”.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.

10 CC (1973):

Erik Stewart
Lawrence "Lol" creme
Kevin Godley
Graham Gouldman
TUTTI POLISTRUMENTISTI E DOTATI DI OTTIME DOTI VOCALI (ALL THE 10CC MEMBERS PLAY SEVERAL INSTRUMENTS AND FEATURE GREAT VOCAL ENDOWMENTS)

TRACK LIST:

1. Rubber bullets
2. Donna
3. Johnny, don't do it
4. Sand in my face
5. Speed kills
6. The dean and I
7. Ships don't disappear (do they?)
8. The hospital song
9. Fresh air for my mama
10. Headline hustler

A CIASCUNO IL SUO ... (EVERYBODY TO THEIR ... TASTE)

Come tutti sappiamo, le preferenze cambiano a secondo dell'età ...

FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND ITALIAN: The above strip is based on a play on the Italian word "bagno" and its derivatives. Below I'm providing a literal translation to help you understand better:

Title: RINFRESCA LA TUA ... CALDA ESTATE ("FRESHEN YOUR ... HOT SUMMER")

1. The two older people on the left say: "Ci facciamo il bagno?", that is, "Shall we bathe?" "Shall we have a bath (for pleasure, for swimming)?"

2. The two kids in the middle say: "Ci facciamo il bagnetto?", that is, "Shall we bathe?" (or, literally, "Shall we have a little bath").

3. The two ladies on the right say: "Ci facciamo il bagnino", that is, "Shall we do (i.e. have sex with) the baywatch?"

UNA SERA DA UOMINI, FINALMENTE! (A REAL MAN'S NIGHT, AT LAST)

NEWS OF THE WORLD (QUEEN) - 1977

“News of the world”, sesto album dei Queen (1977), conclude quella che personalmente definisco la “trilogia d’oro” di Freddy Mercury & Co. vale a dire, “A night at the opera”, “A day at the races” e, per l’appunto, “News of the world".
L’album deve soprattutto la fama a successi planetari quali “We will rock you”, “Spread your wings” e, soprattutto, “We are the champions”, l’inno che ormai accompagna molti eventi sportivi. Pur rappresentando un netto distacco dal suono inizialmente progressive del gruppo, “News of the world” viene giudicato uno dei lavori migliori realizzati dai Queen. Personalmente, considero di gran lunga superiore “A night at the opera” (postato il 27 aprile); tuttavia, c’è un brano di “News of the world” che a distanza di trent’anni continua a farmi impazzire: “It’s late”. Anzi, più lo sento, più lo adoro.
Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

Released in 1977, “News of the world” is the sixth studio album by the Queen. It concludes what I personally call the Queen’s “golden trilogy”, i.e. “A night at the opera”, “A day at the races” and, precisely, “News of the world”.
The album contains such hit songs as “We will rock you”, “Spread your wings” and, above all, “We are the champions” - a sort of an anthem commonly heard at sporting events. Despite being an abrupt departure from the band's early progressive sound, “News of the world” is considered one of the Queen's best albums ever. Personally, I think “A night at the opera” (which I posted on April 27th) is much better; however, “News of the world” contains a piece which keeps on getting me crazy even after thirty years I first listened to it: “It’s late”. The more I listent to it, the more I love it.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.

THE QUEEN (1977):

Freddie Mercury - voce, piano, cori (vocals, piano, backing vocals)
Brian May - chitarre, piano, voce, cori, percussioni (guitars, piano, vocals, backing vocals, percussions)
Roger Taylor - batteria e percussioni, cori (drums and percussions, backing vocals)
John Deacon - basso, chitarre acustiche (bass, acoustic guitars)

TRACK LIST:

1. We will rock you
2. We are the champions
3. Sheer heart attack
4. All dead, all dead
5. Spread your wings
6. Fight from the inside
7. Get down, make love
8. Sleeping on the sidewalk
9. Who needs you
10. It's late
11. My melancholy blues

TERRA IN BOCCA (I GIGANTI) - 1971

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

Many prog fans from outside Italy probably only know "I Giganti" for their much sought-after album entitled “Terra in bocca”. Yet, this band from Milan formed in 1964 and was one of the most successful beat groups in Italy during the Sixties, having recorded two albums and around fifteen singles before splitting in 1972. They even played with the Beatles during one of the concerts held by the Fab Four in Italy. All the members were also good singers and the nice contrast between their different voices (including the characteristic bass tone of drummer Enrico Maria Papes) was one of the most impressive elements in their 60's production.
"Terra in bocca" is a very ambitious concept album - a combination of prog music and Italian melodic pop - about mafia, with strong and brave lyrics and complex music arrangements which, however, are sometimes not perfectly matched with the lyrics. Each track of the album is seamlessly linked to the following one, to form two side-long suites.
For its contents, the album was banned by the Italian radio network. It’s no easy task at all trying to explain to people living outside Italy the reasons why this good album was banned and censured by the media. The lyrics of “Terra in bocca” are about a murder committed in a small village of Sicily, Italy, in 1936. Pretty nice and inspired lyrics indeed, yet the Mafia (I mean the real Mafia as we mean it in Italy, especially in Sicily - alas, my father’s homeland) was (and still is, though to a lesser extent) a “troublesome” subject to deal with.
In 1960, the Italian government did not only cope with the Mafia-related problems: they did deny that such problems existed. The Mafia was - and still is, more than ever before - a system that controls any economic and political activity in Sicily (and in Southern Italy in general). A system whose interests and goals are shared by a social class that could be approximately termed “upper class”. A system that does not grow and develop outside the Government (due to the latter being too weak or unable to fight criminals): the Mafia flourishes within the Government itself. In other words, a criminal organization that can be termed a “scrounging upper class” that exploits and impoverishes both the land and the honest people.” Sicilian writer and novelist Leonardo Sciascia wrote this article in 1972 as an explanatory foreword to his famous novel “Il giorno della civetta” (“The day of the owl”). All in all, reading a novel about Mafia can be much more rewarding and educative than reading any essay on this subject. Therefore, if you really wish to understand the meaning of “Terra in bocca”, I recommend that you read such novels as “Il giorno della civetta” and “A ciascuno il suo” (both of them written by Leonardo Sciascia).
After this lengthy commentary, I wish most of all to recommend that you listen to “Terra in bocca”.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.

INQUINAMENTO ... BIOCOMPATIBILE (ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY ... POLLUTION)

A male whale has about six sexual intercourses each day and ejaculates approximately 1,500 litres sperm on each orgasm. Only 10% of the sperm reaches its “destination”.
Therefore, 1,350 litres sperm are wasted and dispersed in seawater each day: multiply this number by six (the whale’s average sexual intercourses per day) and then by the number of the whales swimming in the oceans.
Now, I want to ask you a question:
HAVE YOU EVER SWALLOWED SEAWATER?
AND WHEN YOU ARE TIRED OF SWIMMING AND COME OUT OF THE WATER, YOU MUST HAVE CERTAINLY NOTICED THAT YOUR SKIN IS BEADED WITH A WHITISH SUBSTANCE.
YOU ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS SALT, DIDN’T YOU?
WELL, I THINK I’LL GO TO THE MOUNTAINS ON MY NEXT HOLIDAY …

CHE CALDO! (SUCH HOT WEATHER!)

A presto.
BUONE VACANZE A TUTTI!

An old friend of mine invited me to spend a few days at his cottage on the mountains.
Though I already took a fortnight's vacation, I have decided that I'll accept my friend's invitation and relax some more.
I'll be back posting in a few days.
HAVE A GOOD HOLIDAY, EVERYBODY!

Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Ottimo.

“Garofano rosso”, the album composed and published by Banco del Mutuo Soccorso in 1976, was not given adequate coverage by the prog rock media. Maybe because the album provided the original soundtrack to an Italian film that did not have a great success. In any case, the soundtrack was - and still is - an outstanding achievement, despite powerful vocalist Francesco Di Giacomo not taking part in making the album.
I’m not going into unnecessary details about “Garofano rosso” – I simply suggest that you listen to it, because it’s a really enjoyable album: a sequence of twelve songs - brief musical “gems” composed and performed in the inimitable Banco del Mutuo Soccorso style.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Very good.

BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO (1976):

Gianni Nocenzi - pianoforte, piano elettrico, sintetizzatori, clarinetto (grand piano, electric piano, synthesizers, clarinet)

I TESTIMONI DI GEOVA: CHE SECCATURA! (JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES: WHAT A NUISANCE!)

Most Italians have got accustomed to - and can't really stand any more - the Jehovah's Witnesses, who keep on knocking on doors and mailing letters and magazines, despite the repeated refusals from the great majority of the persons they talk to.
Like all fervent worshippers (regardless of their religious creed), most Jehovah's Witnesses are over-devout people who consider sex "a necessary evil". The above pictures illustrates two good methods of keeping them far from 1) our home, and 2) our mailbox.

DRAMA (YES) - 1980

Fra i brani che preferisco, in ordine di gradimento decrescente: “Machine messiah”, “Man in a white car” e “Into the lens”.
Voto personale (scarso / insufficiente / sufficiente / buono / distinto / ottimo / eccellente): Distinto.

“Drama”, the tenth studio album by British progressive rock group “Yes”, is unique for being the only Yes release without vocalist Jon Anderson. In early 1980, after rehearsing music for the follow-up to the tepidly-received “Tormato”, both Anderson and keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman had in fact departed the band over creative differences.
Undeterred, the remaining members Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White carried on and invited Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes from The Buggles of "Video killed the radio star" worldwide fame to join Yes - a very unlikely partnership.
Recorded in the spring of 1980 and released in August, “Drama” featured a Yes sound with a distinct new wave flavour (in no small part due to the two new recruits). To ensure that some of the old glory was there, Roger Dean was commissioned to design his first Yes cover in five years, and Eddie Offord, who had co-produced the band in their 1971-1974 heyday, returned to the studio for assistance.
Far from being able to compare with the major hits of the band, “Drama” is in any case a nice listen - my favourite tracks including, in decreasing order, “Machine messiah”, “Man in a white car” and “Into the lens”.
My personal mark (very poor / poor / pass / good / fairly good / very good / excellent): Fairly good.
